Responsibilities
Southern Methodist University invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Dean for Scholarly Resources and Research Services of Central University Libraries. The next few years will be crucial for the CUL as it positions itself to play an increased leadership role in the rapidly changing information landscape of scholarly research at SMU http://smu.edu/cul/index.html. CUL is planning for a building renovation to be completed in 2015; the Assistant Dean will play a crucial role in determining retention and relocation of the physical collections in the renovated facility, and in designing innovative spaces for intentional learning.
The Assistant Dean for Scholarly Resources and Research Services will provide leadership in the area of supporting faculty research and student learning needs and will be directly responsible for developing the vision for CUL’s scholarly resources – the collections (both print and digital) - and research services, including circulation, interlibrary loan, reference and instruction.
Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Create an innovative and future-oriented strategy for CUL’s research services;
• Oversee an information literacy program that serves all SMU’s customer groups in the 21st century;
• Participate in campus-wide strategic enrollment management initiatives;
• Provide leadership and management of day-to-day operations for the Division, including collections and services in the Fondren Library Center, DeGolyer Special Collections, the Hamon Arts Library, the ISEM Reading Room, and the libraries at the Plano and Taos campuses;
• Serve as intellectual overseer of all collections with responsibility for policy development, budget, implementation and direction;
• Oversee CUL’s research services, including the subject liaison program, reference and user education; working directly with Student Affairs to optimize CUL’s role in outreach programs for students;
• Play a leading role in the continued development and expansion of CUL’s digital services and collections.
As a member of the CUL Management Team and Leadership Team and working closely with the Dean, other Assistant Deans, and the Director of Finance, the Assistant Dean for SRRS will ensure organizational effectiveness and efficiency, and share in the responsibilities for decision-making, resource management, strategic direction and development of policies for library operation and services within a collaborative, team oriented environment.
The Assistant Dean will represent the Dean of Central University Libraries within the University, and at local, regional and national meetings. It is expected that the Assistant Dean will be active in the profession at a national and/or regional level. The Assistant Dean for Scholarly Resources and Research Services will have approximately 10 direct reports and will be expected to continue fleshing out a revised organizational structure incorporating the traditional academic library building blocks of collection development, reference and access services.
Education and Experience
ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science or equivalent (e.g. Library and Information Studies, Arts in Information Resources and Library Science, Library and Information Science, Information Sciences) is required.
2nd Master’s degree is preferred.
A minimum of five years of progressively increasing administrative experience is required, preferably in an academic library.
Extensive experience in collection development is required.
Supervisory experience is also required.
Experience in planning and developing strategic direction is strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with the ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with a wide range of constituents. Must also possess strong organizational skills with the ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Experience in budget oversight is desirable.
Candidate must possess strong command of emerging trends in higher education and library administration and demonstrate a record of scholarly and professional involvement.
A strong knowledge of the application of digital technologies in libraries and a strong understanding of public services and collection development policies and operations is essential.
Candidate must demonstrate a track record of collaborative leadership with the ability to foster a collegial work environment. Participation in library professional organizations at regional and/or national levels is expected.
