Overview of the position:

 

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Librarian is responsible for the delivery of Geographic Information Systems services and instruction in support of the Data and GIS Lab in the Koerner Library. In cooperation with a team of professional staff, the incumbent participates in the development and maintenance of the geospatial resources and library collections and services and provides specialised reference and instruction in the field of GIS to faculty, graduate and undergraduate students. Furthermore, the GIS Librarian provides web-based and classroom instruction and assistance in the use of information resources as well as plans and implements services that respond to user needs. Participation in the development of library policy, procedures, and services relating to GIS is another part of this position’s scope.

 

The incumbent reports to the Head of the Humanities and Social Science Division and collaborates with colleagues within the maps and data specialities. The GIS Librarian consults broadly as required and works with faculty, staff, students and the public.  Supervision of library assistants’ work and managing the provision of services or development of collections may be part of this position’s responsibilities.

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Graduate degree from an accredited programme in Library Science
  • Demonstrated experience with geospatial data collections and services
  • Working knowledge of common GIS software tools, specifically ESRI desktop products
  • Knowledge and experience in the collection and development of metadata and current awareness of metadata standards and trends in GIS
  • Ability to identify, retrieve and use data resources as well as communicate geospatial knowledge to researchers with varying levels of technical expertise
  • Demonstrated commitment to responsive and innovative information services 
  • Expertise in the provision of public service including consultation and reference referrals to academic and research communities in the areas of humanities and social sciences 

 

Preferred

  • Academic background in Geography, GIS, or related discipline
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Enthusiasm and ability to teach classes, make presentations and carry out projects, both independently and as a member of a team
  • Experience working in a professional capacity within an academic library 
  • Working knowledge of Canada’s official languages; another foreign language is desirable
  • Experience supervising staff

 

Terms of Appointment and Salary:

This position will be filled as a full time ongoing position. If eligible and qualified, the successful applicant may be appointed with a confirmed appointment. Otherwise, there will be an initial three-year probationary appointment.  Normally, such an appointment is reviewed by the end of the second year of appointment, and a recommendation is made at that time to grant or not to grant a confirmed appointment.

 

Salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.

 

This position will be of interest to candidates with 5-7 years of academic library experience.
