Curator, John W. Barriger III National Railroad Library
(University title to be Librarian II or III, or Senior Manuscript Specialist)
The St. Louis Mercantile Library at The University of Missouri-St. Louis invites applications for the position of Curator of the John W. Barriger III National Railroad Library. This is a 12 month non-tenure track faculty appointment. The Curator reports to the Executive Director of the St. Louis Mercantile Library and works in a team-oriented environment to maintain and to promote the Barriger collections and those of the Mercantile Library. The Curator will combine a passion for transportation history with a strong service orientation, public speaking regarding the collection, fund-raising – including writing grants and the cultivation of in-kind gifts, and reference and collection development duties. Duties will include researching and writing catalogues; the planning, processing, oversight, arrangement and exhibition of collections; traveling to promote, speak and lecture on behalf of the library; handling inquiries from researchers and the public and serving our campus community. This position requires participation in some evening and weekend events. The person in this position may also assume other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: A graduate degree and a minimum of three years experience in a field relevant to the duties of the position; excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a strong service and collegial, team-focused orientation, and the ability to work with a wide range of individuals, including university faculty, students and staff, visiting scholars, and donors; excellent organizational skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and must be able to negotiate closed stacks to retrieve materials of various weights including those located in off-site locations.
Preferred: A second graduate degree or equivalent work experience, preferably in Library and Information Science, History or Museum Studies; curatorial experience; knowledge of railroads; special collections experience; rare book experience; familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat. Experience working with an advisory board is a plus.
Salary: Negotiable, dependent upon qualifications. Minimum: $50,000 plus excellent benefits.

The person in this position will typically move or reposition books, materials, and equipment, and will often need to climb a ladder to retrieve from shelves boxes weighing up to 40 lbs.
