Digital Archivist Librarian

General Summary:
The Digital Archivist Librarian will report to the Associate Director for Library Information & Discovery Systems. This position will work closely with the Special Collections Department and University Archivist, members of the Library Information & Discovery Systems division, the University Records Management Office, and University IT staff to ensure the long term preservation of born digital and digitized electronic records. Additionally, the Digital Archivist Librarian will take a lead role in developing policies and procedures for all phases of the data life cycle, including data curation support and archiving systems management.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the University Records Management team, Library Information & Discovery Systems librarians, and University IT staff to plan, implement, and manage digital preservation systems.
- Manage preservation and access copies resulting from born digital data acquisition and digital duplication.
- Assist in the development of policies and procedures for all phases of the data life cycle according to industry standards, including metadata schema and data entry in support of long term digital preservation and access.
- Participate in Library and University-wide efforts to adopt preservation-minded digital formats and encoding practices to ensure the long term retention of electronic records, including unique datasets and born-digital publications important to the University's history.
- Assist the University Archivist and University Records Management team in finding best practice solutions for the acquisition, ingest and storage of electronic records.
- Assist all interested stakeholders in initiatives related to the discovery of digital resources.
- Explore semantic approaches, data harvesting, and bibliometrics as they may be applicable to projects and services.
- Assess and work to improve access to resources; such as: data sets, e-books, web sites, and locally-created digital collections.
- Participate in professional organizations and keep abreast of archival trends and developments with special emphasis on digital preservation and access.
- Direct activities of one or more student assistants.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Master's Degree from an ALA-Accredited program for Library and Information Science.
- Demonstrated knowledge of archives and records management principles and practices in both digital and analog formats.
- 1-2 years of experience working with digitally borne or electronic records.
- Knowledge and experience with digital preservation theory and practice.
- Demonstrated ability to work with databases and migrate data from one database system to another.
- Working knowledge of PREMIS, EAD, MODS, METS, XML/XSL and other data structure standards relevant to the archival control of digital collection materials.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Visual acuity to review and process electronic records and web based systems.
- Ability to work occasional evening or weekend hours and occasionally travel between the Chicago campuses.
Preferred Requirements:
- Demonstrated skills in project management.
- Working knowledge of Sharepoint.
