University Librarian
At the start of its second decade, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) has already become one of Ontario's most innovative universities. A differentiated, technology-enriched research university, UOIT has a culture of innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. Located in Oshawa, UOIT's growth since its inception has been substantial, and the University is currently home to more than 10,000 students and 1,494 faculty and staff.
Integral to the University's research and academic programs, the University Library is composed of a main library and several branches, as well as digital repositories and archives. Although owned and operated by UOIT, the Library is a shared service between UOIT and Durham College, and thus provides library facilities and services to meet the diverse needs of students and faculty at both institutions. UOIT and Durham College share the main library in north Oshawa. There is a branch library at the Durham College Whitby campus and UOIT hosts two branch libraries in downtown Oshawa (Education and Social Science & Humanities).
Reporting to the Vice President, Academic & Provost of UOIT, the University Librarian is a member of UOIT's Senior Academic Team and is responsible for the successful leadership of all aspects of the Library's strategic vision, collections, programs, facilities, and services. The University Librarian leads the continuing evolution of the Library as a user-centred resource by innovating and integrating diverse resources and technologies. As the Library is a shared service between UOIT and Durham College, the University Librarian is responsible for collaborating with the academic communities at both UOIT and Durham College to cultivate a vibrant and supportive learning community. Functioning as the chief budget and planning officer of the Library, and responsible for recruiting and leading high-quality staff, the University Librarian works collaboratively to improve services, resources, facilities, and operational efficiencies in the Library. In addition, s/he is an advocate for the Library and proactively develops effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administration, cultivating synergies with Library partners, and fostering new sources of funding.
As the ideal candidate, you have a record of excellence in library administration with progressive leadership experience in large, complex libraries serving multiple and diverse stakeholders. You demonstrate a deep understanding of and passion for emerging trends in library technologies, academic libraries, and higher education generally, and are able to adapt to and embrace change. Experienced in library operations, including resource allocation, human resources and evaluating academic library services, you have proven success in financial management and an ability to lead staff and create a culture of collaboration and engagement. In addition, you have strong communication and relationship building skills, a service orientation and a genuine interest in working with students, faculty and library partners. You also have a Masters of Library Science or a related discipline from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.
UOIT is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from qualified women and men, including members of visible minorities, Indigenous peoples and persons with disabilities. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
UOIT respects people's different needs and therefore will take all reasonable steps to ensure accommodation for applicants where appropriate.
