The Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) Libraries seek a dynamic, innovative, and collegial individual to serve as Public Services Librarian in the Public Services Department of the Lilly Library.

 

Founded in 1820, Indiana University Bloomington has grown from a small state seminary into the flagship campus of a great public university with over 48,000 students and almost 3,000 faculty. Innovation, creativity, and academic freedom are hallmarks of IU Bloomington and its world-class contributions in research and the arts. The campus covers over 1,800 wooded acres and is distinctive for both its park-like beauty and an architectural heritage inspired by local craftsmanship in limestone.

 

The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries (http://www.libraries.iub.edu) are among the leading academic research library systems in North America. The IUB Libraries provide strong collections, quality service and instructional programs, and leadership in the application of information technologies. The IU Libraries system consists of twenty libraries on the Bloomington campus, five libraries in Indianapolis, and a library at each of the other six campuses across the state. The collections support every academic discipline on campus and include more than 9.9 million books, journals, maps, films, and audio/visual materials in over more than 430 languages. Users can access more than 400 databases, 60,000 electronic journals, and 1.4 million electronic books, as well as locally developed digital content. 

 

The IUB Libraries are active members of regional and national associations and consortia including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Digital Library Federation (DLF), and is a founding member of HathiTrust, a shared digital repository.

 

The Lilly Library (http://www.indiana.edu/~liblilly/) is the rare books, manuscripts, and special collections library of the Indiana University Libraries, Bloomington.  The Lilly Library’s holdings include about 450,000 books, approximately 150,000 pieces of sheet music, and more than 7.5 million manuscripts in more than 1700 discreet collections.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Head of Lilly Library Public Services:

·         In collaboration with other members of the Public Services Department, provide high quality instruction using special collections materials to diverse audiences, principally undergraduate and graduate students.

·         Coordinate Lilly Library online reference services and provide reference services in person, through email, and over the telephone. Consult with patrons about their research and answers queries. Advise patrons on the use of library finding aids such as written guides, databases, card indexes, and consult appropriate Lilly Library staff for subject specific expertise to obtain correct information for researchers. Guide researchers to uncatalogued material and short title lists.

·         Supervise the Library facility on designated evenings and/or weekends; open and/or close Library, ensuring proper security for rare and valuable material, patrons, and staff.

·         Contribute to Lilly Library social media and related communications.

·         In collaboration with the Lilly Library Associate Director, administer the Lilly Library web site.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

·         Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited graduate program

·         Minimum one year full-time experience providing public services in a special collections repository to a diverse clientele including faculty, undergraduate, and graduate students

·         Demonstrated experience teaching with special collections and commitment to promoting the appreciation and use of special collections materials to a variety of audiences

·         Understanding of the significance of original artifacts and the nature and value of primary materials for learning, teaching, research, and outreach

·         Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with library and campus colleagues

·         Broad general knowledge in the humanities

·         Reading ability in Spanish, French, German, Italian, or Latin

·         Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal communication skills

·         Proficiency with web content management systems and basic XHTML and CSS

·         Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe CS, social media applications, and other common technologies used in academic libraries

·         Must be able to meet the requirements of a tenure-track librarian position

Preferred:

·         Additional graduate degree in a discipline related to the collections of the Lilly Library

·         Knowledge of the history of the book and the book arts and of the methods and materials that have been used to create and disseminate archival and non-print materials

·         Knowledge of the basic history, theory and professional practices relating to materials generally found in special collections research libraries, including but not limited to rare books, maps, prints, photographs, ephemera, archives, manuscripts, original artwork, audiovisual media, and digital materials

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and education; benefits include a university healthcare plan, university-funded base retirement plan, a 100% university paid group life insurance plan, and a generous paid time off plan.
