Job Description
The University of Denver Libraries, comprised of the Main Library at the Anderson Academic Commons and the Bonfils Stanton Music Library in the Lamont School of Music, is a highly collaborative organization that serves a diverse population, ranging from our students, staff, and faculty to public and other academic patrons from the surrounding region. Opened on March 25, 2013, the Academic Commons is the campus centerpiece for collaborative, technology-infused teaching, learning, and engagement. Position Summary
Reporting to the Dean and Director of the University Libraries, this position serves as the Associate Dean for Scholarly Communication and Collections Services. The Associate Dean carries overall leadership responsibility for collections and scholarly communication. The Associate Dean is expected to guide strategic planning, develop programs, and manage services in support of discovery and access to scholarly resources, whether licensed, purchased, or openly available. Specific areas of responsibility include acquisitions, collection development, archives and special collections, exhibits, e-resources management, metadata and materials processing, and scholarly communication and open access initiatives. This position is responsible for personnel management and performance reviews for library faculty and staff in its reporting line. Essential Functions
- Serve as a leader within the library, and on campus, in the areas of scholarly communication, collections, and bibliographic services.
- Manage the collections budget and guide decisions about collection development and management.
- Work in accord with the promotion guidelines, and engage in scholarly activities through research and publication, as a library faculty member.
- Represent the Dean at the campus or other external levels when needed, including the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries and the Greater Western Library Alliance.
- Manage human resources functions and performance reviews of library faculty and staff reporting to this position, as one of two Associate Deans.
- Seek input as appropriate from others while preparing performance reviews.
- Participate actively in national and regional professional organizations.
- Meet frequently as appropriate with those who report to this position and with others within the library organization to ensure ongoing communication about the progress of all programs, projects, and initiatives, and ensure that all intended outcomes are met.
- Participate in the library management group and other committees.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- In-depth understanding of contemporary trends in academic publishing and scholarly communication.
- Knowledge of acquisitions and licensing process and experience negotiating with vendors.
- Evidence of effective leadership and analytical skills for decision making.
- Working knowledge of information technology, electronic resources, and emerging metadata standards.
- Ability to articulate a clear vision in keeping with the goals and mission of the library.
- Ability to use knowledge, experience, awareness, and skills to advance the school's commitment to diversity and inclusion and effectively engage with a broad spectrum of culturally diverse groups and communities.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, effectively, and confidentially, using tact and excellent judgment.
- Ability to organize work and set priorities.
- Ability to actively engage in the library organization, including leadership and participation in teams, task forces, and committees.
- Ability to work professionally in support of colleagues.

- Ability to share responsibility as a faculty member in the library's mission, goals, programs, and plans.
Required Qualifications
- ALA accredited MLS degree or equivalent advanced academic qualification in information services.
- Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience and demonstrated leadership in an academic library with collection development or acquisitions responsibilities.
- Combination of experience, professional service, and scholarly activity that will allow appointment at level of Associate Professor or Professor.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three (3) years management or supervisory experience.
- Background working with budgets.
- Understanding of public and technical services.
- Experience working with state and regional consortia.
- Experience with archives and/or special collections.
