J.Y. Joyner Library, East Carolina University (ECU) seeks a forward-thinking, flexible, enthusiastic, user-focused individual to fill the faculty position of Digital Archivist within the Special Collections Division. The individual in this position works with university departments to ensure the successful transfer and long-term preservation of born-digital university records. The person in this position also facilitates the digitization of holdings within the Special Collections Division.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Assistant Director for Special Collections, the Digital Archivist provides key support to the University Archives and Records Program. The successful candidate will: 1. Develop a sustainable born digital e-records management system; 2. Develop procedures for ensuring the long-term preservation of digital materials found in manuscript collections; 3. Participate in the division's ongoing implementation of archival content management systems; 4. Work with the Digital Collections Librarian to ensure the online accessibility of finding aids; and 5. Work with staff throughout the division to select materials for digitization. The Digital Archivist serves on the Digital Collections Team and the Digital Collections Advisory Board; consults with metadata providers; and participates in the Special Collections Division's public service activities, including instruction, reference, and social media services. Some weekend and evening work is required. F inalists will be asked to make a presentation during the on-campus interview.
Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in library or information science (or international equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program or a master's degree in public history, archival studies, history, or a closely related field; working knowledge of EAD and XML; knowledge of the principles of archival management; experience with digitization projects; familiarity with archival content management systems, such as Archivists' Toolkit or ArchivesSpace; knowledge of issues related to the capture and preservation of electronic records; knowledge of digital preservation standards; ability to coordinate projects effectively, including organization, prioritization, and goal-setting; commitment to providing superior user-centered services; excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with staff and users.
All degrees must be conferred by an accredited institution by the hire date.
Preferred Education and Experience: Knowledge of North Carolina history or field related to the holdings of the Special Collections Division; experience in providing public service in a library or archival setting; experience with archival or manuscript processing; knowledge of relational databases; knowledge of metadata schemas, such as Dublin Core, METS, MODS, PREMIS, and TEI; familiarity with cataloging standards, in particular DACS and MARC; digitization project management experience; certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists.
