Position:
The Princeton University Library seeks an accomplished, energetic, service-oriented and creative subject specialist to build library collections and provide library services in the fields of American History and African American Studies. This is one of two key library liaisons to Princeton's large and diverse Department of History (the other focused on European and world history), which is consistently ranked the best in the nation. This librarian has additional duties as the dedicated subject specialist and liaison for the interdisciplinary constituencies of the Department of African American Studies, as well as supporting the library needs of other relevant interdisciplinary and area studies constituencies on campus. The position is part of the Collection Development Department, reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Collection Development.
Responsibilities include current and retrospective collection building in all formats; managing large general and restricted endowed acquisitions funds; advising on preservation, digitization, and other aspects of collection maintenance, including selection for offsite storage; and providing general and specialized research assistance, especially for work in American history and African American Studies, to Princeton University faculty and students, visiting research fellows and scholars from the US and abroad. The librarian provides public services and bibliographic instruction in the use of print and electronic resources in various library and classroom settings; creates resource guides and web sites to assist Princeton students and researchers; consults with members of the Technical Services Department to facilitate timely acquisitions and processing; coordinates service provision and collection policies closely with other subject specialist librarians (in Collection Development, Research and Instructional Services, and branch libraries); and collaborates with Rare Books and Special Collections on acquisitions and to promote use of the wealth of original and specialized material at Princeton. This librarian represents Princeton in the relevant regional, national, and international professional and scholarly organizations.
Required Qualifications:
§ An ALA-accredited Master's degree in library science or equivalent combination of education & professional library experience
§ Demonstrated academic strength in a field pertinent to American History or African American Studies
§ An advanced degree in History or African American Studies
§ Minimum 3 years professional library work in an academic or research library
§ Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work successfully and collegially with a diverse group of colleagues and scholars
Strongly Preferred:
§ Broad familiarity with academic research in the fields of both African American Studies and American History
§ Experience conducting instruction in an academic setting or experience with public outreach programs or equivalent experience with instruction, outreach, and assistance for individual researchers
§ Demonstrated success working collaboratively with all levels of users and staff, across all functions of the library system
§ Ability to work effectively in a rapidly changing environment
