Librarian IV, Assistant Branch Manager and Information Services Librarian, Main Library

Full-time position, non-exempt

Vacancy:  12-ML-12

 

SUMMARY: Under administrative supervision, this is highly responsible professional library work, which involves administering one or more major operations or functions of a resource center.  Performs related and other work as required.

 

REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Applicant must have the following:

1.      attainment of B.A. or B.S. from an accredited university/college;

2.      attainment of a graduate degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited university;

Applicant must have either:

1.    two years of full-time, post-MLS library experience

OR

2.    four years of full-time paraprofessional, relevant library experience, including supervisory experience.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Comprehensive knowledge of:

1.    professional library principles and practices;

2.    public library functions, facilities, and operations;

3.    patron needs and library services to meet those needs;

4.    standard library automated system modules;

5.    electronic and printed materials, resources and databases.

Demonstrated ability to:

1.    handle both routine operations and long-range planning;

2.    establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public;

3.    supervise, train, and evaluate support staff;

4.    schedule department staff and work flow for maximum effectiveness;

5.    communicate effectively, orally and in writing, to groups and individuals;

6.    be proficient on the computer with various software.

 

GENERAL DUTIES

1.     Branch and Department management:  Coordinates, directs and supervises all of the work of the Information Services Department; serves as the Assistant Branch Manager of the Main Library Resource Center; acts as Branch Manager in the absence of the Branch Manager; oversees daily activities, assigns tasks and coordinates work flow; aids the department employees in achieving the department and branch goals; provides opportunities for continuing education in various areas of expertise; creates an environment conducive to communication and cooperation. 

2.     Personnel:  Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates seven (7) full-time and nine (9) part-time employees; fully participates in the hiring process; reviews work plans on a regular basis; maintains effective working relationship with all staff and is available for the staff to discuss all issues as needed; assists with weekly-timesheets utilizing Replicon software; schedules substitutes as needed; covers for personnel shortages; recommends staffing needs and changes; conducts investigations and resolves employee inquiries and/or complaints; assists administrative supervisors with handling of these and other personnel matters; participates in corrective action meetings; makes informed decisions based on policies listed in the Employee Handbook; keeps staff and supervisors informed on new policies and procedures.

3.     Facility Management:  assists with overseeing daily use, care and upkeep of the building and grounds including plumbing, heating/cooling, lighting and lawn maintenance; signs and keeps records of work completed; works with building cleaning service.

4.     Branch Security:  responds to after-hours security calls; instructs guards and evaluates service; works with security officers to provide for safety of patrons and staff; maintains a current Branch Emergency Procedures Manual, emergency supplies, and ensures all staff are prepared to handle emergency situations; coordinates and conducts building evacuation drills at least semi-annually; completes reports on security incidents at the branch; monitor employee access to building; monitor officers’ working hours.

5.     Public Service:  Performs reference and readers’ advisory duties as required; assists patrons and staff in the use of databases, digital resources, Internet usage, software applications, and hardware; provides assistance to patrons using technology center; coordinate and conduct computer classes for the patrons; coordinate, conduct and promote all adult programs; instructs school classes in the use of library facilities and standard reference tools, and conducts outreach program for the community, if needed coordinate the production of a reference newsletter and monthly displays in the Information Services Department; maintain and oversee the Meeting Room registration and calendar; conducts investigations and resolves patron inquires and/or complaints; assists administrative supervisors with handling of these matters.

6.     Finances:  Responsible for counting Fines and Miscellaneous Receipts on a rotational basis and preparing money and reports to be sent to SML Financial Assistant.

7.     Reports:  Keeps detailed records of all Reference-related services.

8.     Collection Development:  Reads reviews and offers suggestions to Acquisitions staff for selection of Reference and adult books, periodicals and other materials; weeds collection on an on-going basis; shelf reads collection as needed.

9.     Professional Development:  Attends monthly management meetings and Regional meetings, meetings of appointed committees, and workshops and conferences.

10.  Other duties as required.

 

PRESENT SCHEDULE [subject to change without notice]:

Monday & Wednesday:             8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (with one hour lunch)

Tuesday, Thursday & Friday:      8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (with 30 minutes lunch)

Some evenings and Saturday shifts may be required as needed.

Will work some Sundays on a rotational basis, year-round.
