The Georgetown University School of Foreign Service-Qatar's (SFS-Q) library advances and supports the learning, teaching, and research goals of the university while also serving as a resource for the Qatar community. The Associate Director of Library Access, Digital and Media Services provides leadership in the development and operation of the Library with primary responsibility for the Library's access, web development, and media production services. The position plans and implements library services, policies, procedures, and communications; recruits, develops, and supervises staff in designated areas; and assists in coordinating operations between the Washington and Doha campuses. The position manages the library's web presence and front counter services with responsibility for circulation of materials and customer services. The position is also responsible for the library's digital devices, audio-visual materials, and media production services. The position provides reference services for faculty and students.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, review, and document library policies and procedures for materials circulation, patron records management, intercampus and interlibrary loans, course reserves, media materials & equipment, digital devices, and media production equipment, facilities, and services.
- Lead, supervise, train, mentor, guide, and evaluate librarians and library staff in Access services and Digital & Media services.
- Supervise customer service functions at the library's front counter.
- Manage patron inquiries through the library webmail services.
- Manage UCL-Q integration of borrowing and lending policies and patron records.
- Oversee and manage public patron services.
- Manage the library's security system and its integration with the library software system.
- Lead the development and implementation of a library communications strategy and plan.
- Supervise the development and maintenance of the library's website and other public relations services.
- Manage the library's digital devices and media resources.
- Develop and manage the library's media production services, including facilities, software, equipment, and training.
- Initiate and plan for emerging technologies and innovative ways of providing access, media, and digital services.
- Work closely with internal departments and main campus counterparts on library initiatives and services.
- Identify and develop ties with external library service providers and partners.
- Assist in planning and overseeing the library's physical space.
- Participate in planning and monitoring library budgets.
- Oversee front counter staff and student assistant schedules.
- Manage the recruitment, training, scheduling, monitoring and evaluating of student assistants.
- Collect, organize, and analyse library statistics
- Provide reference desk coverage during scheduled time periods (may include evenings and weekends).
- Participate in evaluating resources and services with a view to constant improvement.
- Serve on library and institution-wide committees and task forces.
- Take a leadership role in local, regional, and international library activities and organizations.
- Share library management responsibilities with the Library Director and other Associate Directors.
Requirements:
- Masters in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited program or equivalent accreditation body.
- Additional graduate degree in an academic discipline or business/public administration is desirable.
- 5+ years of academic library experience, including management in a senior library role.
- Significant experience in library access, digital, and media services functions.
- Demonstrated track record of establishing and facilitating collaborative relationships and working with diverse cultures.
- Thorough knowledge of library circulation, media, digital, and web services.
- In-depth knowledge of integrated library software systems, library security systems, and interoperability of data structures.
- Sound knowledge of communication methods and strategies and of academic information systems and reference sources.
- Strong information navigation skills.
- Superior oral and written communication skills.
- Must be fully conversant with library systems and information technologies, and in particular with the III integrated library software system and 3M RFID system.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Must possess a record of professional participation and accomplishment.
- Arabic language proficiency would be an asset.
