International Library Science Internship Position
Longwood Gardens, in the Philadelphia area
Longwood Gardens Library and Archives seeks an Library Science or Archival Studies (or equivalent) graduate student or recent graduate to gain experience in the operations and management of a special library and institutional archives. Interns work in each section of the unit—Library, Digital Gallery, and Archives—to develop projects aimed at furthering the professional interests of the student while working to achieve unit strategic goals.
Position is available: May 15, 2013 - May 2014

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
* Perform basic reference interviews and services. Become familiar with, and able to train others in, using Longwood Gardens' EOS International integrated library system (ILS), OCLC WorldCat, Agricola, and other relevant databases.
* Arrange and describe archival collections, develop finding aids, and make recommendations regarding storage, conservation and preservation treatment of archival materials
* Perform circulation maintenance routines, such as check-in/check-out, shelve books and compile usage statistics.
* Assist and train patrons in the use of computers and software, A/V equipment, and copier.
* Assist with Interlibrary Loan tasks as needed.
* Assist with digitization/scanning projects.
* Learn cataloging procedures and assist in cataloging materials (or object collections) as needed.
* Assist with project work involving digital imaging, the ILS, and the Archives.
* Perform various daily administrative and technical tasks.
* Participate in student activities and field trips as scheduled.
Applicants must be active and ambitious learners and are expected to strive for efficiency and a high level of quality in all tasks performed. The willingness to follow all supervisor instructions and Longwood safety procedures is essential. Proof of proficiency in English is required from all applicants. A valid driver’s license written in English or an international driver's license is preferred. Candidates must be independent-natured, able to perform repetitive tasks, and lift 50 lbs. Some weekend and evening hours might be required.
Qualifications
* Be pursuing or have recently completed a graduate program in Library Sciences or Archival Management studies.
* Be able and willing to work independently.
* Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to deal with people in a courteous, patient, and professional manner.
* Have physical ability to push fully-loaded book carts and handle heavy or oversize volumes. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
* Be willing to follow all of Longwood Gardens' policies and procedures.
* Have a valid driver's license.
The position extends throughout one full year, full time, 40 hours per week. This is a paid position with optional free housing provided. Longwood Gardens offers a mandatory medical insurance plan (does not include dental or eye care) to all International Program participants. The Pennsylvania State University Libraries seek applications and nominations for the position of Archivist for Collection Management. The person appointed to this tenure-track, faculty position will manage the arrangement and description of the Eberly Family Special Collections Library’s manuscript and archival collections using national and local standards. In addition, this position administers the Library’s installation of the Archivist’s Toolkit and its archival finding aid discovery system.
Responsibilities:
- Management of archival processing
- Oversees accessioning, arrangement, description and encoding for all archival and manuscript collections.
- Establishes local processing standards according to best national practice.
- Works with curators and the University Archivist to establish priorities and deadlines for processing projects.
- Delivers training on standards and processes such as DACS and EAD to move collections from ingest to accessibility.
- Develops arrangement and description plans that balance the realities of budgets and staffing with patron access needs.
- Work with the Special Collections Cataloging Team to provide/update collection level information in the University Libraries’ catalog.
- Performs regular reporting of metrics for processing projects.
- Provides advice and support for archival processing conducted at other Penn State campuses.
- Management of Special Collections archival discovery systems
- Manages and improves finding aid usability, including:
- Work with IT staff on platform evaluation, installation, and troubleshooting.
- Working with IT staff, manages and delivers training for EAD authoring tools.
- Oversees finding aids maintenance (additions, updates, linking to catalog records and digital collections)

- Supervision
- Directly supervises the Collections Management Specialist, who accessions new materials in the Archivist’s Toolkit, assigns locations, and edits holdings information in catalog records.
- Supervises and/or coordinates full-time and part-time staff, student assistants, and interns engaged in collections processing.
- May also supervise other staff, including project archivists, students, and interns.
- General Duties
- Provides reference service to faculty, students, and other researchers on a rotating basis, including occasional weekend duty.
- Completes other special projects as assigned/directed.
- Participates in local, regional, or national professional organizations; enrich professional expertise by attending conferences and continuing education opportunities.
- Represents the Special Collections Library on library committees, task forces, etc., as needed and appropriate.
Qualifications:
- Required:
- Minimum qualifications are a MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program (or equivalent), or a Masters in Information Science, Archival Science, or related field.
- Experience with arrangement and description of archival and manuscript collections.
- Working knowledge of archival and descriptive standards, including DACS, EAD, MARC, LCSH, and Dublin Core.
- Knowledge of basic preservation standards for archival and manuscript collections.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
- Excellent technical skills, including experience with Microsoft Office, cataloging systems, and EAD authoring tools
- Ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, in a collegial environment.

THE ROBERT B. HAAS FAMILY ARTS LIBRARY
The Haas Family Arts Library at Yale consists of collections from three formerly-separate operating units: Art and Architecture, Arts of the Book, and Drama. Now located under one roof, these libraries support arts-area programming at Yale, including the Schools of Architecture, Art, and Drama, and the department of the History of Art, as well as the teaching and research needs of the Yale community beyond the visual arts. In addition, the Arts Library houses several prominent archival and special collections in Art and Architecture, Arts of the Book, and Drama, ranging from type specimens and woodblocks to theatrical archives to one of the world's foremost collection of books on color.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Yale University Library welcomes applications and nominations for the 2013/14 Kress Fellowship in Art Librarianship. The Kress Fellowship is intended for a recent graduate from library school who wishes to pursue a career in art librarianship. This fellowship is made possible through the generosity of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. Through this fellowship, the Kress Foundation seeks to achieve in the field of art librarianship what it has accomplished for art history and art conservation: ensuring the growth of the discipline by promoting the advancement of new professionals.
The Haas Family Arts Library at Yale serves a distinguished array of academic and museum programs, architects, artists and scholars. Kress Fellows have the opportunity to interact routinely with faculty, staff and students in distinguished Schools of Architecture, Art, and Drama; a nationally ranked department of the History of Art; and two outstanding university art museums, the Yale Center for British Art and the Yale University Art Gallery. They also have occasion to collaborate with colleagues from throughout the Yale University Library, including the Sterling Memorial Library, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, and the library and rare books department of the Yale Center for British Art. The rich professional and scholarly resources of New York City and Boston's art libraries and museums are within two hours travel, providing still further opportunities for professional growth and professional contact with colleagues.
RESPONSIBILITIES
This year the focus of the Kress Fellowship will be on public services librarianship with focus on the history of art, which will include experience in reference services and library research education. During their tenure at Yale, Kress Fellows are expected to pursue a mutually agreed-upon project resulting in a publishable paper or a new library service (such as a web page or research guide). Kress Fellows are also introduced to a broad spectrum of professional activities and may have the opportunity to perform collection development activities or assist with library-based exhibitions. Kress Fellows also participate in library planning committees and task forces and engage in campus, regional, and national professional organizations and other collaborative activities. Expected to be professionally active and represent the Library and the University in the academic, scholarly, and professional community. May be required to participate with disaster recovery efforts.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information science. Excellent analytical, organizational, management, customer service, and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively build partnerships and promote the benefits of change in an academic culture that often values ambiguity, diversity of opinion, and historic precedent. Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written expression. Ability to work both independently and collegially in a demanding and rapidly changing environment.
Preferred:
1. Advanced degree and/or relevant experience in history of art, architecture, or related arts disciplines.
2. Reading knowledge of two or more Western European languages.
3. Experience with web design and development and electronic information resources.
4. Experience with HTML and XML.

Position Focus
Under the supervision of the Library Chief Technology Officer, manages, and monitors the design, development, implementation, and communication of policies and practices for a sub-unit within the Library Information Technology department that supports the Yale University Library. Manages a team of Desktop Support technicians responsible for delivering expert, efficient, and cordial computing support to the Library’s staff, as well as some specialized patron systems. Manages the desktop, laptop, and mobile computing environment for the Library. Recruits, trains, and manages a staff of Macintosh, Windows, and Mobile OS technical professionals responsible for providing service and support. Coordinates with Yale ITS on computing infrastructure issues as needed. Manages a $375K+ equipment budget including a bi-annual equipment request cycle. Works on special projects as assigned.
Workstation and Technology Services is a tier 1, 2, & 3 support organization focused on interacting with Library customers on a daily basis. We are the first point of contact for many IT services and our emphasis is on enhancing the productivity of our customers by providing service as reliably and efficiently as possible. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

POSITION Focus
Reporting to the Head of Technology and Digital Assets, the Lead Developer develops, integrates, implements, and supports both front end and back end web applications. Works collegially and collaboratively with staff within Beinecke, across the Yale University Library, the Office of Digital Assets & Infrastructure, and Yale Information Technology Services. Takes the lead role in providing recommendations, technical guidance, designs and documentation for projects related to implementing new systems, improving existing systems, describing how the new technology will integrate into staff workflows, and specifying how outside units or vendors will participate in projects.
REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provides technical expertise in developing programs or systems of moderate to large size.
2. Responsible for the development and delivery of applications, programs, and systems. Evaluates departmental business and administrative processes and needs. Identify, define, and analyzes system requirements to meet the expectations of stakeholders and intended end user needs, scheduled timeline, and budgetary targets.
3. Defines and designs new systems and applications. Provides business solutions. Performs complex problem solving.
4. Provides technical guidance and recommendations for projects which includes architectural design, technology selection and methodologies to apply. Responsible for the creation, definition, requirements, communication and management of project plans. Plans billable time and project implementation costs.
5. Provides ongoing maintenance and support for applications and systems.
6. Drives the development of systems documentation. Develops formal design proposals and cost and time estimates for new systems. Trains and mentors technical staff. Provides training to end users.
7. Recommends and creates new policy.
8. Applies and keeps current with existing and emerging technologies and methodologies. Provides ongoing input to the establishment of programming standards, procedures, and methodologies.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree. Five years of related experience in analysis and programming of medium to large-scale systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
1. Expert knowledge of: server-side web programming languages; user-facing web standards and platforms; all aspects of coding, debugging, and unit testing routines for any project.
2. Demonstrated ability with: managing, migrating, and integrating complex data sets; using and developing web applications and services, both local and cloud based server environment using UNIX, Linux, and Microsoft Server running web server software.
3. Database administration and programming experience, particularly with MS SQL Server (SSIS, SSRS), MySQL, PostgreSQL, and/or Oracle. Must demonstrate the ability to craft SQL, stored procedures, automate regular ETL routines, and user-defined functions.
4. Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize workload to meet deadlines in an environment of multiple and changing priorities. Apply well-developed analytical and problem solving skills with an ability to address high-level technical problems and provide workflow and resource analysis.
5. Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written expression. Demonstrated ability to work well independently and with others. Must be willing to present work to both technical and lay audiences.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS
Experience with: PHP, Python, Ruby on Rails, .Net using C# or Visual Basic, and/or Java; user-facing web standards/platforms (Drupal, WordPress, HTML/XHTML, cross-browser CSS, Javascript, jQuery/AJAX, mobile web); library software (Atlas Aeon, Archivists’ Toolkit, VuFind, Blacklight, LadyBird); search platforms (i.e. Apache Solr); web server software (Apache HTTP, Tomcat, Microsoft IIS 6/7). Demonstrable track record of developing high quality and innovative applications, products, and services preferably in a library, academic institution, or the non-profit sector.

Position Focus
The Public Health and Geographic Information System (GIS) Librarian will provide vision and strategic leadership for the development of innovative programs to support the research, teaching, academic computing, and service missions of the Yale School of Public Health (YSPH). Major responsibilities will include innovation in information management, development of new programs, and the further development of already established service roles relating to the information needs of students and faculty in the School of Public Health. The Librarian will develop, expand and support geospatial information expertise among Medical Center GIS users. This position reports to the Associate Director of the Medical Library and the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, School of Public Health.
Provides reference assistance and liaison services to faculty, students, and staff, including grant-supported work. Promotes systematic approaches to searching for and managing information. Provides robust instruction program covering basic and advanced library research techniques and methods via one-on-one sessions, seminars, and course-integrated presentations. Supports faculty use of distance learning and course management systems and technologies.
Manages public health information resources, including development of the collections and information resources, and educational support programs. Formulates, administers and evaluates policies, procedures and budgets relating to acquisitions, reference and electronic materials. Coordinates with other units on purchasing electronic resources, ensuring that public health information needs are met.
Assists Medical Center affiliates in the selection and use of appropriate GIS technologies, supports the design and execution of projects using GIS, and provides instructional support in GIS.

Contributes to the University Library, School of Public Health, and the School of Medicine planning activities, committees, and task forces and engages in campus, regional, and national professional organizations and collaborative activities. Contributes to the profession and represents the Library and the University in the academic, scholarly, and professional community. Serves as a member of the Medical Library team and works to further the overall goals of the Medical Library.

Required Skills and Abilities

2. Familiarity with geospatial methods, spatial data formats and models, and spatial statistics, particularly with regard to applications in epidemiology and public health.
