[LIBJOBS] Washington, DC USA; Director, Bioethics Research Library

Director, Bioethics Research Library

Georgetown University invites applications for the open position of Director of the Bioethics Research Library (BRL).

Profile of the University and Bioethics Research Library

Located in Washington, DC, Georgetown University is a comprehensive research university of three campuses, with a strong commitment to student learning, engagement with policy, and an international focus.  With a strong focus on ethics scholarship, learning, and service, the University is home to the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, one of the founding institutes for the study of bioethics, an interdisciplinary field that addresses emerging and perennial ethical and policy issues around health and medicine; the environment; and biotechnology.

The Bioethics Research Library (BRL), positioned within the Kennedy Institute, houses the world's largest collection of bioethics materials.  Formerly the National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature, its staff includes four MLS content-expert positions, as well as three other professional staff positions, who report to the Library Director.  It is a destination library, hosting Visiting Researchers from around the globe, as well as local policymakers.  In addition to creating the first major collection in bioethics, the first comprehensive citation-database for the field of bioethics, and creating a controlled vocabulary used for indexing literature, its specialized collections have a particular focus on grey literature in several languages, and showcase bioethics from the perspective of the world's major intellectual traditions, both religious and secular.  It currently has funded projects with Germany and Qatar, and is exploring opportunities for partnerships in India.

Working in close collaboration with Georgetown's Main Campus library, Lauinger Library, as well as its Medical and Law Center libraries, the BRL also has a core mission to serve and support the University's research and teaching functions.  As part of a recent set of initiatives oriented around serving the University, the BRL has partnered with Georgetown's Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship to help develop and deliver the next generation of bioethics curriculum.

Role of the Position

Reporting to, and working closely with, the Director of Georgetown's Kennedy Institute of Ethics, the BRL Director will be responsible for charting the future course for the BRL as it enters a phase of re-envisioned and expanded mission, including enhanced service to the undergraduate teaching mission of the University, expanded access to its unique collections, and partnerships with other institutions in creating a dynamic social research space for the global bioethics community to exchange scholarship, share research, and engage in discussion.

Responsibilities include strategic planning; information-sharing and dissemination to and among diverse populations; developing initiatives that enrich student learning, faculty research, and scholarship at Georgetown; and establishing robust scholarship databases or platforms, either alone or in collaboration with other institutions, in support of the global bioethics community's information needs.  The Director will contribute to the development and oversight of curriculum-integrated research instruction; collaborate with faculty in bioethics to develop course content; identify technologies to facilitate instructional goals; build partnerships within and outside of the campus; and create effective on- and off-line tools for users of BRL's resources.  The Director serves on the Georgetown University Library Directors Group, which includes the directors of the Main Campus, Law, and Medical Center libraries.

While we seek a candidate knowledgeable about and capable of overseeing operations of an academic library, equally important are vision, creativity, and the ability to lead in an agile, innovative, forward-looking environment.

The candidate must have demonstrated progressively responsible supervisory and administrative experience, as well as a collegial working relationship with staff, faculty, peers, and outside collaborators.
