Position Description
Reporting to the Director of Access Services, the Associate Director for Resource Sharing and Reserves is responsible for developing and providing leadership for Yale University Library’s Resource Sharing and Reserves programs in a rapidly changing and complex environment by planning, implementing, and improving resource sharing and reserve services for Yale University Library that support teaching, research, and learning.

Responsibilities
Working collaboratively with colleagues throughout the Yale University Library, the Associate Director for Resource Sharing and Reserves provides direction and leadership in all areas of resource sharing and reserves, including Interlibrary Loan, Borrow Direct, Scan on Demand, and traditional and electronic Reserves. The Associate Director also provides direct oversight and management of the Interlibrary Loan, Borrow Direct, Scan on Demand and Reserves activities in Sterling Memorial Library and Bass Library. The Associate Director serves as a member of library wide committees, takes a leadership role for Resource Sharing and Reserves, assesses resource sharing and reserves programs for Yale University Library and implements improvements in workflows and productivity, technology, and service to users. Keeps abreast of new technologies, enhancements and trends being used in the field.  The Associate Director works collaboratively with the Assistant Heads of Circulation and Information Services to develop cohesive Access Services programs at the Sterling Memorial and Bass Libraries.  The Associate Director serves as a resource in questions of copyright and fair use as they apply to resource sharing and reserves services.  The Associate Director works with Library IT to coordinate and schedule upgrades to resource sharing and reserves hardware and software, and is responsible for related staff training and documentation for Yale University Library.

The Associate Director will also play a key role in the development, implementation, and assessment of new document delivery initiatives at Yale University Library: scan-on-demand of journal articles and book chapters, investigation and implementation of Reserves management software, and delivery of library materials to campus offices.

The Associate Director represents Yale in the Borrow Direct consortium of user-initiated borrowing among the eight Ivy League libraries and M.I.T. The Associate Director also represents the Yale University Library at professional conferences and resource sharing meetings and assumes an active, leadership role within the profession.

The Associate Director directly and indirectly manages the work of 15 full-time employees and several student assistants.

Qualifications
Master's degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited school. A minimum of five years of experience providing interlibrary loan, document delivery and/or reserves services in a large research library.  For appointment to Library IV, eight years of relevant professional experience and professional accomplishment are required.

Demonstrated supervisory experience and successful experience managing change.  Successful history of meeting service expectations, developing benchmarks and metrics to evaluate services, and a commitment to providing high quality and responsive service.  Considerable experience using interlibrary loan processing software programs such as ILLiad, OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing, Odyssey, and Ariel, and in training others to use them. Demonstrated leadership ability in working collaboratively with others in teams.  Demonstrated ability to use office productivity software (e.g. MSOffice) required.

Ability to effectively build partnerships and promote the benefits of change.  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and work well with colleagues and library patrons, individually and in groups.  Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and implement projects.  Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and solve complex problems and to make decisions. Ability to manage financial resources effectively and to manage personnel and materials expenditures within budgeted allocations. 

Ability to work independently, collegially, respectfully and collaboratively in a diverse, team environment and to deliver a wide range of services.  Creativity, flexibility, and ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively within and across departments in a rapidly changing environment.

Preferred:  Experience in evaluating and developing copyright and fair use policies in the areas of resource sharing and reserves.  Experience managing in a unionized environmentExperience with Ares course management software.
