Schedule:            Full-time (37.5 hours per week); Standard Work Week (M-F, 8:30-5:00)

Manuscripts and Archives

Manuscripts and Archives in the Yale University Library is a major center for historical inquiry and also serves as the documentary memory of Yale University.  The repository holds 64,000 linear feet of material.  Half of the holdings is comprised of more than 1700 collections of personal and family papers and organizational records that document a variety of subject and geographical areas, and half is comprised of the Yale University Archives.  The repository also preserves and services 4000 testimonies from the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies.  Each year the materials are consulted by more than 1000 Yale faculty as well as students and scholars from the United States and throughout the world.  The staff of the repository consists of fourteen professionals, two managers, ten support staff, and fifteen student assistants and occasional temporary positions.  They are responsible for the selection, acquisition, arrangement, description, and preservation of manuscript and archival collections and for providing reference services for in-person and long-distance research, services to University offices, and teaching assistance in the use of the collections.  Please visit us online for additional information at http://www.library.yale.edu/mssa/.

 

The Position

In conjunction with and under the supervision of the Senior Archivist for American Diplomacy, the Kissinger Project Archivist is responsible for the arrangement and description of the Henry A. Kissinger papers.

 

Responsibilities

1.      Responsible for arrangement and description of the collection in accordance with approved plans; screens for potentially sensitive material; weeds extraneous material; recommends appropriate preservation and conservation procedures; and coordinates the copying and/or digitization of materials for preservation and access.

2.      Applies complex standards to determine provenance.

3.      Assists in the preparation of a finding aid for processed materials, including a biographical sketch or historical note; scope and content note; and appropriate listing of materials.

4.      Trains and supervises staff and/or student assistants assigned to assist with the project.

5.      May assist in research services functions of the department through weekly service on the reference desk and involvement in primary source instruction to the Yale community.

6.      Makes recommendations on personnel selection, staffing requirements, and equipment and supply needs.

7.      Participates in library-wide planning and committee work as appropriate.

8.      Is an active and contributing member of the archival profession.

9.      Assists in maintaining the emergency response plan and responds to emergencies and recovery efforts as needed. May be assigned to work at West Campus location in West Haven, CT.

 

Qualifications:

1.  ALA-accredited MLS and/or MA degree in history or related discipline and two years of relevant professional experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments.

2.      Formal archival training or education and demonstrated knowledge of archival theory and practice.

3.      Demonstrated proficiency in archival processing, including minimum processing, and archival appraisal. Familiarity with basic preservation and conservation standards for archival and manuscript collections.

4.      Excellent oral and written communications, organizational, analytical, problem solving, and customer service skills. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines. Creativity, flexibility, and ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment.

5.      Ability to work independently, collegially, respectfully and collaboratively in a diverse, team environment and to deliver a wide range of services. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively within and across departments in a rapidly changing environment.

6.      Demonstrated experience in use of technology with a wide range of desktop software applications.  Ability to readily adapt to change. 

7.      Ability to lift 30lb boxes and push heavy book trucks on a frequent basis.

 

Preferred:

1.      Demonstrated proficiency with Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS).

2.      Experience in using the Archivists’ Toolkit for finding aid creation. 

3.      Knowledge of 20th Century American diplomatic history.

4.      Demonstrated experience managing projects.
