Burns Library of Rare Books and Special Collections into the research, teaching, and learning environments of the campus and beyond. The ideal candidate will recognize and appreciate the sense of wonder that special collections materials can instill in students and faculty alike, and is driven to ensure these materials are discoverable, accessible and effectively used in academic endeavors. The Burns Library holds world-class print collections in areas related to Jesuitica, Irish Studies, and British Catholic Authors, as well as significant archives and manuscript collections. The AUL for Special Collections will have a unique opportunity to provide leadership in developing programs and services that emphasize discovery, accessibility, and transformation of special collections, while continuing Boston College's commitment to building distinctive and enduring collections in identified and emerging areas.
The Libraries are committed to exploring a curator model for supporting special collections. The AUL should have an understanding of and commitment to the curator model, some experience with digitizing special collections, strong managerial skills, and be comfortable in a highly collaborative campus environment.
The successful candidate will serve on the University Librarian's Advisory Council (ULAC) and participate in all strategic planning and priority-setting activities. The AUL will take the lead in all areas of special collections operations and digitization, and will collaborate with the Burns Librarian to ensure sound and fiscally feasible collection decisions. Moreover, the long-term space plan calls for a renovation of the Burns Library and the entire Bapst Building, to create a state of the art special collections facility. The AUL will have an opportunity to help envision and implement the renovation. | | Requirements | | Master's degree from an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science program (or equivalent.
Relevant subject master's degree, with Ph.D. preferred
