[LIBJOBS] Qatar - Doha - Middle Eastern Studies Librarian

The Qatar Foundation is establishing a state-of-the-art Central Library to serve the diverse information needs of the residents of the State of Qatar. The Central Library, to be located in Education City, will take a leadership role in meeting Qatar Foundation’s goals to become Qatar's premier information resource for the academic, research and public community. It will serve the general public of Qatar, universities, schools, research institutes and Education City partners. The Central Library will offer a suite of educational and research opportunities, services and programs supported by comprehensive collections of print and digital materials. The library building, designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, is scheduled for ground breaking in the first quarter of 2011 with an anticipated opening in the summer 2013.

 

The Central Library seeks dynamic, innovative, service-oriented and culturally sensitive applicants for the position of Middle Eastern Studies Librarian.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The position will be the primary bibliographer responsible for developing a premiere collection of materials, in Arabic and English that connect scholars, students and the general public with information about the contemporary experience of GCC members (post 1954). The position will also identify Arabic language resources for the general collections of the library. The position will liaise with assigned QF entities and will develop and deliver outreach activities to Qatar based organizations to support the research, learning, information, and recreational reading needs of Qatar.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Develop the library collection by searching for, identifying and evaluating and selecting relevant materials through the application of standard library collection development methodologies in conjunction with the Collection Development policy.

·         Advance scholarship of the GCC region through the development of finding aids, bibliographies, indexes, curriculum resources, etc.

·         Participate in programs and services that support information, reference, research and instruction within the subject area.

REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

·         Masters degree in Library or Information Science accredited by the American Library Association or foreign equivalent.

·         A Masters or Phd in Middle Eastern Studies would be an asset.

·         Progressively responsible experience in Special Collections, Collections Management or Public Services.
