Job Summary: Southern Methodist University is accepting applications for a full-time Science Librarian to provide research, instruction, and collection development support for faculty and students. Join a growing subject librarian program designed to increase faculty and student awareness of the power of librarian involvement with the curriculum. Reporting to the Director of Fondren Library and Head of Research Services, this position will become part of a dynamic, hard-working and fun team. We are seeking a librarian with imaginative and innovative ways to support science faculty and students. Rank is dependent on qualifications and experience.
Environment: Southern Methodist University is a nationally ranked private university in Dallas with seven degree-granting schools and approximately 11,000 students. SMU is a distinguished center for teaching and research located in a culturally rich city with a diverse population.
Essential Functions
• Subject librarian to Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Anthropology, Physics, Statistical Science, Mathematics, and the online master’s degree program in Data Science
• Collaborates with faculty to offer instruction, promote and increase knowledge of scholarly communication, and offer research support to faculty within assigned area
• Designs and facilitates instruction in collaboration with faculty and offers information literacy workshops appropriate to varied audiences
• Designs online library-related resources and instructional materials to support the curriculum
• Communicates with faculty in assigned subject areas to develop and assess the library’s collections and to integrate library resources into teaching and learning in the University Curriculum
• Works with faculty to promote the SMU Digital Repository, supports faculty grants and research, and offers assistance in creation of faculty data management plans
• Provides general and specialized reference services and research consultations
• Participates in relevant library and university committees
Education and Experience
• ALA - accredited master’s degree in Library or Information Science is required (candidates with anticipated MLS graduation by December 31, 2016 will also be considered).
• Undergraduate degree in the sciences or familiarity with the scientific literature is strongly preferred. (Subject expertise may be demonstrated through course work or substantive work experience.)
• Experience with reference, instruction, or collection development in an academic library is strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Knowledge and understanding of information literacy, reference, and collection development practices and trends
• Familiarity with information literacy, teaching methods and instructional design
• Demonstrated initiative and flexibility, and ability to work independently and collaboratively
• Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
• Commitment to professional development
• Familiarity with subject-specific science databases and major science resources
Physical/Environmental Demands: The position requires the ability to push and pull, sit for long periods of time, and handle delicate objects (dexterity).
