[LIBJOBS] Job Posting: Special Collections & University Archivist at Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles, CA, USA)

Loyola Marymount University seeks a vibrant, experienced archivist to join our team as the Special Collections and University Archivist.

Supervising a full-time archival processing assistant and reporting to the Head of Archives and Special Collections, the successful candidate will develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to provide standards-based access to the library’s manuscript and archival collections, including the University Archives. In addition to providing curatorial leadership, the Archivist is an essential participant in the department’s dynamic outreach efforts, actively teaching in our classroom, curating exhibitions, building collections, and working with donors, researchers and other members of the LMU community. This is a full-time permanent position.

Loyola Marymount, founded in 1911, is a comprehensive university in the mainstream of American Catholic higher education. As the direct successor to St. Vincent’s College, established in 1865, our history traces the evolution of the oldest institution of higher education in Los Angeles. Located on the west side of L.A. overlooking the Pacific Ocean, LMU is one of the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities and five Marymount institutions.  It serves 6200 undergraduates and over 2100 graduate students in the Colleges/Schools of Liberal Arts, Science and Engineering, Business Administration, Communication and Fine Arts, Film and Television, Education, and Law. Loyola Marymount seeks professionally outstanding applicants who value its mission and share its commitment to academic excellence, the education of the whole person, and the building of a just society. The library’s staff reflects the diversity of LMU’s student body and the greater Los Angeles area. LMU is an equal opportunity institution actively working to promote an intercultural and ecumenical learning community.

The Department of Archives and Special Collections is the Library's major resource for rare and archival materials covering an extensive range of topics, formats, and periods. Research strengths include Jesuit and Marymount history, Catholic history of Los Angeles, the Reformation with an emphasis on Thomas More, seventeenth-nineteenth century English and American literature, twentieth century Japanese art, and postcards. The Department houses the historical archives of the University, a broad range of manuscript collections, and the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles Research Collection. We are committed to providing the students of LMU a transformative academic experience through active learning and research using historical primary source materials.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience working in an academic or research archives. The position requires a Master’s degree in archival studies and/or an MLIS with advanced course work in archives or manuscript management from an ALA-accredited school or program.

The position is currently available and will be open until filled. Deliberations on the pool of candidates will begin as applications are received.
