The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries (http://www.libraries.iub.edu) are among the leading academic research library systems in North America. The IUB Libraries provide strong collections, quality service and instructional programs, and leadership in the application of information technologies. The collections support every academic discipline on campus and include more than 6.6 million books, journals, maps, films, and audio/visual materials in over 900 languages. Users can access more than 400 databases, 43,000 electronic journals, and 224,000 electronic books, as well as locally developed digital content. Of particular note are the 8-million volume high-density Auxiliary Library Facility (ALF) for preservation and access to the libraries’ collections and archives, and the Lilly Library, the rare books, manuscripts, and special collections library of the Indiana University Libraries, Bloomington.
The IUB Libraries are active members of regional and national associations and consortia including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Digital Library Federation (DLF), the Hydra community, and is a founding member of HathiTrust, a shared digital repository. IU is the principal investigator for Kuali Open Library Environment (OLE) and is working with academic library partners to develop a next generation open source library management system. IU is a founding partner in Unizin.org, a consortium of institutions seeking to provide teachers and students with more digital learning options.
The Indiana University Libraries seeks a knowledgeable and dynamic individual to provide library services for the Reference Department in a rapidly changing environment. Working closely with other librarians and partners, the Scholarly Services Librarian will take an active role in providing guidance for this changing department as it works to balance the emergent focus on digital scholarship while maintaining traditional research values and services.
As a member of the Reference Services Department, the Scholarly Services Librarian will provide operational oversight for the Scholars’ Commons and the many opportunities for research and collaboration therein. In this role, this position will be responsible for managing reference and consultation services, fostering relationships with scholars and departments from across the spectrum of digital scholarship, overseeing our abundant investment in digital research tools, resources, services, and facilitating project development across the interdisciplinary range of interests and discourses as they intersect within the space. The position will also strengthen librarian and staff awareness and knowledge of digital practices, including overseeing and coordinating ongoing research service initiatives such as the HTRC, which will similarly enhance the libraries’ commitment to and relationship with creating tools and endorsing scholarship within the digital domain.
With collection and liaison responsibilities with the Media School, this position will be uniquely situated at the intersection of digital scholarship and the larger media conversation happening across fields. Alongside fostering partnerships with digital scholars generally, this position will serve as fund manager and liaison for the departments that make up the new Media School, as well as coordinating the collections, services and liaison work of librarians in other library departments who work with the Media School., Crucially, this position will play a key role in aligning the Scholars’ Commons and other digital services with library film and media centers, such as the Library’s Media Services and Moving Image Archive.
Beyond traditional subject relationships, this position, like all others in the Reference Services Department, will serve as a cross-disciplinary liaison to faculty and students across the campus who focus on digital scholarship broadly. With a strong public services focus and dedication to the fast-changing digital research milieu, the Scholarly Services Librarian will connect users with the Scholars’ Commons while working to foster a space and community for scholars to come together and share resources and ideas. By providing a connective framework for librarianship and digital scholarship, particularly in growing areas such as the digital humanities, visualization studies, and media, this position will be integral to maintaining and expanding the libraries' and campus' commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Digital Research & Scholarship
· Develop new and support existing campus partnerships with units supporting research
· Work with subject librarian colleagues to reach out to faculty and students to provide research digital technologies support
· Work with colleagues in areas complementary to digital scholarship support including Digital Collections Services, Library Technologies, and University Information Technology Services
· Participate in curation of digital displays, and use social media tools and outlets for promotion of library resources, collections, and services
Subjection Liaising & Collection Development/Maintenance
· Serve as liaison to assigned academic departments and develop collections therein
· Manage multiple collections funds and collaborate closely with related collection managers to build collections in areas relevant to the Media School
· Develop and manage relationships and explore and maximize partnerships with academic departments
· Maintain awareness of research practices and teaching needs in the Arts and Humanities
· Develop and deliver innovative online and face-to-face information literacy instruction
· Contribute to academic course development by providing consultation and support for faculty, instructors, and other scholars
· Provide research consultation and support to faculty, students, and staff
Reference & Instruction Support Services
· Maintain knowledge of information sources/platforms and vendors across subject areas
· Participate in planning, organization, implementation, and direction of public services for the Arts and Humanities and Reference Services departments
· Oversee the development and provision of research and consultation services
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
· ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) or equivalent education and experience. Undergraduate degree in humanities preferred
· Strong public service orientation
· Ability to work in a team environment and build working relationships with campus colleagues
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work well with a diverse population of faculty, students, and academic colleagues
· Demonstrated ability to deliver in-person and online reference services
· Ability to meet the requirements of a tenure-track librarian position
· Experience or coursework in Digital Humanities or Digital Scholarship
· Two or more years of experience in an academic/research library
· Ability to handle multiple responsibilities in a rapidly changing environment
· Knowledge and understanding of key issues and trends that affect academic libraries and higher education
· Supervisory experience in an academic library
· Collection development experience in media or communication
Preferred:
· Knowledge of, enthusiasm for, and experience in the application of new technologies in the evolving academic information environment
