Libraries Serving Persons with Print Disabilities
Dear Madame /Sir,
We would like to inform you that currently five students of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam (Netherlands) are carrying out a research on behalf of the Royal Dutch Library (KB).
The KB is, among many other things, responsible for the local libraries and their services for the print disabled.
The Dutch national office called Library service for Accessible Reading is the national front office that provides direct services to the print disabled and supports local libraries for doing the same.
In spite of intensive recent campaigning the number of people using adapted reading services falls behind the expectations made on the basis of statistics on the occurrence of visual impairment especially among the elderly (above 50 year of age)
The main objective of our research is to investigate how we, as organizations in the Netherlands, can increase our reach amongst the group of visually impaired in the age category of 50+.
As a part of their research, these five students would like to find out more about the way other countries are currently offering similar kind of services and how they reach their target groups.
We kindly ask for your support and input into this research, by answering the six simple questions below.
The kind request is to return the answers to marg.vanderburgh@kb.nl. and reply preferable before the 21st of November.
The questions are:
• What is the main goal of your organization? (just 1 or 2 lines)
• Could you inform us if you have any specific target groups for which your organization has a separate strategy in order to reach these group(s)? And subsequently what is your reach among those groups?
• Can you inform us what kind of service your organization is providing to visually impaired?
• Do you deliver the services directly to the needed or are you using any partners, intermediate organization, etc.?
• We were wondering if your organization is (partly) funded by third parties, i.e. such as charity or (local) governments.
• Do you have any supporting documents, which might be interesting for us to study in light of the afore-mentioned?
We would like to thank you in advance for your time and effort in answering these questions.
We think you will find the results of our research very interesting. If you are curious about that, we will send you a summary at the end of the research. You can send an e-mail at marg.vanderburgh@kb.nl for having the summary in February 2016.
With gratitude and our sincerest regards,
Marg van der Burgh
