The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries (http://www.libraries.iub.edu) are among the leading academic research library systems in North America, having recently been named the top university library by the Association of College and Research Libraries. The IUB Libraries provide strong collections, quality service and instructional programs, and leadership in the application of information technologies. The collections support every academic discipline on campus and include more than 6.6 million books, journals, maps, films, and audio/visual materials in over 900 languages. Users can access more than 400 databases, 43,000 electronic journals, and 224,000 electronic books, as well as locally developed digital content. Of particular note are the 8-million volume high-density Auxiliary Library Facility (ALF) for preservation and access to the libraries’ collections and archives, and the Lilly Library, the rare books, manuscripts, and special collections library of the Indiana University Libraries, Bloomington.

 

The IUB Libraries are active members of regional and national associations and consortia including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Digital Library Federation (DLF), the Hydra community, and is a founding member of HathiTrust, a shared digital repository. IU is the principal investigator for Kuali Open Library Environment (OLE) and is working with academic library partners to develop a next generation open source library management system.

 

The Indiana University Libraries seek a collaborative and knowledgeable professional to serve as an expert in Romance languages in support of cataloging production and initiatives. Reporting to the Head of Monographic Text Cataloging, the Romance Languages Cataloger will create bibliographic and authority records for the Libraries’ integrated library system and the OCLC WorldCat database. Additionally, the incumbent will assist cataloging division managers in determining cataloging policy and creating support documentation. This is a tenure-track academic appointment with requirements of professional development and service.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide full-level original cataloging of monographs, both tangible and electronic, in Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, etc.) and English
• Contribute bibliographic and authority records to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), an international initiative coordinated jointly by the Library of Congress and PCC participants worldwide
• Serve as an expert cataloger and liaison to collection managers and teaching faculty for Romance language collections
• Stay abreast of national developments in RDA, LC-PCC policy statements, OCLC and MARC21 documentation and other cataloging standards as they emerge and develop 
• Revise cataloging of other catalogers
• Prepare or assist in the preparation of policies, procedures, and reports
• Supervise, train, and evaluate temporary employees

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or an equivalent combination of an advanced degree and relevant experience.

·         General professional proficiency in reading for one or more Romance languages, preferably Spanish. (Able to read within a normal range of speed and with almost complete comprehension a variety of authentic prose material on unfamiliar subjects.)

• At least two years of professional metadata/cataloging experience in an academic or research library system
• Demonstrated working knowledge of cataloging rules, standards, and tools such as RDA, AACR2, LCSH (and other controlled vocabularies), and of developments and trends in the field
• Knowledge of evolving metadata standards and schema (i.e. MARC, BIBFRAME, Dublin Core, EAD, TEI, etc.)
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an environment of continuous change
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment
• Ability to meet the requirements of a tenure-track librarian position

Preferred

• Advanced professional proficiency in reading in multiple Romance languages. (Able to read fluently and accurately all styles and forms of the language pertinent to professional needs. Able to read and understand the intent of writers' use of nuance and subtlety.)
• Experience with OCLC and integrated library systems
• Evidence of an ongoing record of professional development contribution
• Knowledge and understanding of key issues and trends that affect academic libraries and higher education.
