INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN LIBRARIAN
The FIU Libraries seek a creative, innovative, and learner-centered Instructional Design Librarian to provide leadership in identifying, implementing, and maintaining instructional technologies and resources to help deliver scalable and sustainable online instruction, to improve teaching effectiveness, and ultimately, to enhance the Libraries' Instruction and Information Literacy program through the knowledgeable application of principles of instructional design and assessment. Working in close consultation with the Coordinator of Library Education Programs, the ideal candidate will assist in the continued advancement and expansion of a well-established, student-centered library instruction program and will creatively apply sound instructional design techniques and assessment practices to both instruction and public services, in an academic library setting.
As a member of the RefTech Team, the research and instructional technology support unit, within the Information & Research Services' (I&RS) department, the Instructional Design Librarian, works collaboratively with the Coordinator of Library Education Programs, to fulfill departmental and Library teaching and learning initiatives, by: designing and developing learning objects; delivering in-person and virtual course-related library instruction sessions; and working with both subject liaisons and teaching faculty, to integrate meaningful learning activities and general and course-specific library instruction materials that support information fluency and technology skills.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Instructional Design & Assessment
o In collaboration with the Coordinator of Library Education Programs, develops and maintains learning objects, tutorials, learning modules, and other technologically enhanced instructional materials for access through the Libraries' Web site, inclusion within the university's learning management system, or for use in conjunction with other teaching strategies in a blended learning environment
o Participates in assessment of the impact of information fluency instruction, and the success of instructional technologies and methods used in instructional delivery; Plays a significant role in the evaluation and assessment of activities regarding information fluency
o Utilizes instructional design standards and best practices for the creation, archiving, and dissemination of learning objects or other technologically enhanced instructional materials; Coordinates with the RefTech Team, the Coordinator of Library Education Programs, the User Experience Librarian, and others within the Libraries to maintain awareness, availability, and appropriate standards for instructional design resources
o Collaborates with subject liaison librarians to identify opportunities to enhance their instruction technologically, and serves as a resource to liaison librarians to assist them in the creation of online learning materials; With the Coordinator of Library Education Programs, creates innovative and effective approaches to strengthening faculty skills to design curriculum, tools and learning experiences that enhance critical thinking and information fluency
o Makes recommendations to develop new instructional programs, classroom activities, and online instructional tools, this includes expanding information and digital literacy efforts and increasing the libraries' online support services for instruction
· Reference, Instruction, & Collection Development
o Participates in public service delivery to faculty and students and provides basic reference services (email, phone, chat, etc.). Some evening and weekend hours may be required.
o Contributes to the I&RS instruction program.
o Takes part in collection development and performs campus departmental liaison duties.
· Scholarship, Service, & Professional Development
o Participates in scholarship, faculty governance, and service as a library faculty member
o Works cooperatively on departmental or library-wide initiatives as appropriate to position functions
o Other responsibilities include: maintaining current awareness of emerging instructional design skills/techniques and their applications to library instruction; actively participating in local, national, and international meetings and organizations
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· ALA-accredited MLIS and a degree/certificate or coursework in instructional design
· Minimum of four years post-MLIS experience in a library or educational institution
· Demonstrated competency and effectiveness in instruction, in a face-to-face or virtual classroom setting
· A minimum of one year of academic library assessment experience; documented experience in developing assessment tools and administering assessment in both physical and virtual environments
· Demonstrated ability to effectively use emerging library and teaching/learning technologies, including learning management systems; Experience with technologies and tools that deliver e-learning content such as course/learning management systems, content capture tools, and presentation tools
· Academic background, coursework, or relevant experience in instructional design, including knowledge of basic instructional design concepts (ADDIE, etc.); and/or Comparable documented experience with production tools (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, Audacity, and Camtasia)
· Demonstrated commitment to user-centered library services and the ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing and fast-paced environment with a culturally diverse population
· Experience providing instructional technology consulting and support, instructional design, and/or instructor training in a higher education setting, preferred
· Excellent interpersonal communication, presentation, and organization skills, including the ability to effectively impart knowledge and skills
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· Ability to work flexibly, creatively, and collaboratively in a changing and fast-paced environment with a culturally diverse population; Strong organizational and time management skills with emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail
· Strong leadership skills and ability to work independently, collaboratively, and in teams within library and university web/online communities
· Demonstrated project management and problem solving skills and an established ability to handle multiple projects and responsibilities concurrently
Rank/Salary:
Non-tenured faculty status; rank and salary are competitive based on qualifications and experience.
