Position:    Director, Library Department

Salary:       $110,237 To $132,000 annual starting salary, negotiable depending on qualifications

Location:   3650 Summit Blvd

                  West Palm Beach, FL 33406

                 

The Director provides executive-level management and leadership for the Palm Beach County Library System, a distinguished, award-winning library consisting of the Main Library and 16 branch libraries, approximately 400 employees and an operating budget of over $48 million, funded by a separate millage.  The Library serves a diverse, multi-cultural population of almost one million residents.

 

The Director regularly consults with stakeholders who include citizens, elected officials and the Friends of the Library and networks with other area libraries and consortia.  Additionally, the Director plans and initiates development and expansion programs, confers with the Library Advisory Board on policy matters, represents the Library to County Administration and implements Board of County Commissioners’ directives. 

 

This position oversees a workforce that provides a richly varied array of programs and services including online resources available at www.pbclibrary.org, outreach to residents of all ages and circumstances, approximately two (2) million holdings, brisk annual circulation of nine (9) million and imaginative reference services. 

 

The Palm Beach County Library System is a distinguished regional library, having won the 2014 Florida Library of the Year and 2014 National Talking Books for the Blind awards.  The Library recently completed an extensive capital projects improvement campaign that included renovating/expanding 12 existing branches; designing, building and opening five (5) new branches and incorporating the latest state-of-the-art learning and research technologies.

 

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated belief in the essential role of the public library in the community.  Additionally, this candidate will possess a proven track record in library advocacy, an understanding of library technology, demonstrated leadership in library policy matters, thorough knowledge of financial and collaborative management practices and political acumen.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s Degree in Library Science accredited by the American Library Association; minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible administrative and managerial experience in public libraries that includes assistant/associate directorship or higher of a public library and seven (7) years in a multi-outlet public library system.
