Library Services at Sidra Medical and Research Center includes two branches; the Clinical Library that will provide access to the latest clinical information in support of patient care, continuing medical education / training of healthcare professionals and biomedical research and the Patient Resource Center (PRC) that will provide access to quality consumer health information in support of education for patients, their families and caregivers to enable them to become more active in making informed decisions about their health.
The Library Technician serves as a technical expert and provides direct advanced technical support including triage of information requests and setting up library orientation and teaching schedules. He/She acts as the point of contact for all aspects of integrated library systems inclusive of circulation, acquisitions/ordering/purchasing, and document delivery modules, in addition to being responsible for processing/shelving/inventory and maintenance of both physical and online library collections, and website/portal maintenance. The incumbent also assists in all related commissioning activities as required and ensures that quality technical library services are provided in an efficient, safe and culturally competent manner, consistent with the unit's high standards.
- Serves as frontline staff for Library Services within both the Clinical Library and Patient Resource Center by helping clinicians and library clients with information requests
- Performs advanced technical duties in one or more areas of library technical services operations such as collection support, document delivery, website maintenance acquisitions and/or circulation
- Provides direct technical support for clinical and patient education librarians including finalizing collections to ensure efficient acquisitions and ordering process
- Works under the guidance of the systems librarian to develop policies and procedures related to document delivery, website maintenance, and set-up of various modules within the Integrated library system (ILS)
- Catalogs all library resources within the ILS utilizing MARC standards and other bibliographic control measures
- Installs and tests all library IT and audio-visual equipment / hardware and software
- Proactively tests online access to all library resources and reports any problems for resolution
- Demonstrates the operation of the equipment to all library staff and clients/users
- Assists clinical staff with information skills training sessions and community based patient education sessions
- Maintains systems, staff availability and scheduling, and equipment to a high standard
- Coordinates and maintains operations manuals for library IT equipment and software in conjunction with vendors and license agreements for library resources from publishers
- Gives presentations at meetings or conferences as required
- Provides ongoing support for librarians by assisting with all related library activities
- Adheres to established library standards and practices and role models the delivery of best practice in current role
- Reports unit activities, progress and potential problems to the Director – Library Services
- Participates in research initiatives and educational activities to maintain professional competencies and current knowledge base
- Contributes to the strategic planning of library services
- Keeps colleagues apprised of quality issues, assessment findings and upcoming initiatives
- Supports new Sidra staff with information services and gathers feedback from Sidra staff about library services
- Initiates and updates individual professional development plan and provides feedback to the Director on progress in achieving departmental goals
- Adheres to Sidra's standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest policies
In view of the evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra during this pre-operational phase, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary
- Bachelor's Degree or Diploma/Certification in library and information science or library technician studies
- 2+ years of library experience, preferably within a medical/life sciences library
- Demonstrated familiarity (knowledge and skills) with current technology related to library technical services
- Experience in one or more areas of library technical services operations
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels of library users – faculty, researchers, clinicians, students (from affiliated institutions), administrators and staff
- Ability to exercise good judgment in situations that warrant individual interpretation of library policies and procedures
- Demonstrated ability in organizing data (e.g. statistics) for use in library reports
- Demonstrated fiscal responsibility in the use of all resources
- Strong customer service orientation
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
- Fluency in written and spoken English
