GOVERNMENT DATA AND INFORMATION LIBRARIAN

The University of California, Santa Barbara, one of ten campuses of the University of California system, is seeking dynamic, highly motivated candidates for the position of Government Data and Information Librarian to provide collection management, research assistance, instruction, and outreach services to students, faculty, staff and community users.

ENVIRONMENT

Among the top research libraries in the country, the library’s collections include approximately 3 million volumes, over 1 million government publications, and over 6 million non-print and digital resources.  The Library is a United States Federal Depository Library.  The collection supports undergraduate and graduate programs in 33 academic areas and serves the wide-ranging research needs of diverse campus programs and centers. Central to the campus skyline as well as to its mission, the library takes pride in providing outstanding service to all its clientele.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Head of the Reference Services and participating in the Social Sciences Collection Group, the Government Data and Information Librarian has responsibility for all aspects of collection management and development for government information and law, including selection of information resources, collection management and evaluation, faculty liaison, budgetary management, and resource sharing, including participation in University of California system-wide collection development and preservation projects for print and digital resources.  Acts as the UCSB Library liaison to the U.S. Federal Depository Library Program and the California Depository Library Program.  Assumes a leadership role in planning and developing data services and collections and provides consultations and instruction on finding and using government data.  Provides engaged, knowledgeable liaison and collaboration with faculty and students to develop their awareness of the complex and changing scholarly information environment.  Collaborates in the development of both print and digital collections relating to government information and law, maintaining awareness of developments in scholarly communication, intellectual rights, and publishing.

Responsibilities include working individually and as part of a team to contribute to creative and innovative approaches to advancing the Library’s services.  Participates in scheduled multi-disciplinary reference desk service, online chat reference for the UC Cooperative, research consultation, instruction in assigned disciplines, and outreach activities.  Includes some evening and weekend assignments.  Participates in an active instructional program, including teaching a credit-bearing library research class.  Develops and delivers presentations to specialized classes and provides individualized assistance to students and faculty with research needs in government information and law.  Designs and maintains online guides to specialized Library resources.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:  ALA accredited MLS.  Academic background and/or knowledge of government information and law or related disciplines demonstrated through coursework or work experience. Background or strong interest in government data or digital resources.  Demonstrated experience in reference and library instruction.  Ability to create instructional materials and utilize web design tools to facilitate instructional goals.  Understanding of current and emerging trends in government information research and scholarship and the ways in which scholars in related fields produce and use information resources.

A strong commitment to excellence in public service and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative and culturally diverse environment.  Demonstrated initiative and flexibility.  Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.  Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and community users.

Preferred:  Degree and/or relevant experience in political science, U.S. history or related disciplines. Experience with social science collections and services in libraries.  Two to three years professional experience in an academic library.  Experience working with government data and digital resources, including the ability to download and transform data files to meet the various needs of users.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.  Librarians at the University of California, Santa Barbara are professional academic appointees who accrue vacation at the rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per month.  The University has an excellent retirement system which is coordinated with Social Security.  A selection of group health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans are offered by the University.
