Position Title: Head of Access Services

 

Job Purpose: This position works with the Associate Director for Technical Services to develop long term strategic goals and objectives of the National Library access services area.  The Head of Access plans, implements and manages the access services areas of all National Library locations .Provides leadership and guidance regarding the development and management of access services workflows.  Supervises and coordinates the staff and daily work of the Access Services team .Liaises with Public Services and Library Information Technology staff to ensure effective and user-friendly access to library resources.

 

Key Result Areas:

Ø  Provide leadership to the Qatar National Library in the formulation of policies, practices and projects relating to library resources access

Ø  Develop, implement and manage the policies and procedures relating to the access of library resources

Ø  Develop policies, programs and workflow for user registration, circulation, fees collection, shelving and stack maintenance, reserves, document delivery, inter-library loans and reciprocal borrowing programs

Ø  Act as focal point for the resolution of user issues, collection of fees, privacy concerns

Ø  Ensure user privacy and programs that safeguard physical assets.

Ø  Supervises the overall work of Access Services staff

Ø  Serve as resource person regarding access issues both within the team and in other areas of the Qatar National  Library and its stakeholders

Ø  Design, coordinate and deliver training curricula and establish performance standards for Access Services staff

Ø  Keep abreast of developments, trends and issues in all areas of responsibilities

Ø  Contribute to the profession by publishing, presenting or participating in professional organizations

Ø  Conduct special projects and participate in team work to set up the Qatar National Library

Ø  Perform miscellaneous duties and serve on designated committees as required.

Ø  Provide library leadership to Qatar, the region, and internationally in the areas of access services

Ø  Assists in the creation of services and programs to meet the reading, information, education, and research needs of users

Ø  Manages and enhances the workflows regarding circulation and shelving of library materials

Ø  This position includes, but is not limited to, other duties as required and defined by the scope, purpose, and spirit of the institution and are not always indicative of the title and grade of the position.

Ø  Familiarize, understand and implement QF health, safety, and environment policy, procedures, legal regulations and objectives applicable to areas of responsibility. Ensures coordination with HSE department in implementing, monitoring and reviewing of HSE performance to ensure work under his/her control is performed in a safe, healthy and environmentally sound manner.  

 

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

 

Ø  Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) or other internationally recognized library qualifications

Ø  Seven or more years supervisory experience in a technical services environment

Ø  Demonstrated ability to plan and manage multiple projects and assignments concurrently and effectively

Ø  Experience with library management systems , Millennium system experience preferred

Ø  Knowledge of access service issues affecting all library resources

Ø  Familiarity with international and regional standards and protocols dealing with resource sharing and access to library materials

Ø  Knowledge of standards pertaining to accessibility of the facilities for all users in a library environment

Ø  Familiarity with the concepts, goals, teaching methods relating to access service staff

Ø  Curious and inquisitive about broad cultural issues in order to be proactive in anticipating user needs

Ø  Demonstrated ability to analyse user access requirements in order to deliver effective and efficient solutions

Ø  Strong analytical, interpersonal and English oral and written communication skills

Ø  Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team

Ø  Record of leadership  in library professional organizations

Ø  Flexibility with changing responsibilities and duties as new and additional needs become known

Ø  Experience in a multi-cultural environment preferred
