DRUE HEINZ LIBRARIAN
The Drue Heinz Librarian, who coordinates with the Trustee Library Committee, reports to the Director in Rome and supervises the work of a 5-person staff in the Library, as well as 1-2 staff members in the Photographic Archive. The Librarian supervises collection development, develops and administers the library's budget, develops grant proposals for public and private funds, and represents the Library both in Rome and abroad, assuming other related duties as required.
ORGANIZATION
The American Academy in Rome is a private, not-for-profit institution, founded in 1894, which confers the Rome Prize and supports Rome Prize Fellows in their independent study and advanced research in the arts and the humanities. The Academy occupies an eleven-acre site on the Janiculum hill of Rome. The Arthur and Janet C. Ross Library serves the needs of the Fellows, the residential community, and qualified readers from Rome and beyond.
The Library collection (comprising about 140,000 volumes) provides support in the academic disciplines of the fellowship fields (ancient studies, medieval studies, Renaissance and early modern studies, and modern Italian studies). Its principal strength is in ancient studies, especially Greek and Roman literature and ancient Greek, Etruscan and Roman topography, art and archaeology; there is a strong secondary collection in the history of later Italian art and architecture. In these fields, the Academy library collection aspires to provide the resources for scholarly research at the highest level. In other disciplines, including those represented by the Academy's fine arts fellows, the Library seeks to offer basic materials and core collections.
The Library has recently undergone a renovation, enhancing the use of existing space. The Library employs the integrated library management software "Millennium" (Innovative Interfaces, Inc.), as part of the Rome-based URBS library consortium (Unione Romana Biblioteche Scientifiche).
POSITION DESCRIPTION

Desired qualifications include: an ALA-accredited degree in Library Science or its equivalent; an advanced degree in the humanities; five or more years experience at the managerial level; professional fluency in English and Italian; advanced Library IT knowledge; and oral and written leadership skills.
