The American University in Cairo (AUC) invites inquiries, nominations and applications for Dean of Libraries and Learning Technologies (LLT).
Housed in a stunning and inviting new building in the center of AUC’s new campus on the outskirts of metropolitan Cairo, LLT includes the Main Library, with the largest English-language research collection in Egypt; the Rare Books and Special Collections Library, specializing in the civilizations of ancient, medieval, and Modern Egypt and the region; and the Center for Learning and Teaching, which promotes excellence in teaching, including the effective application of technology to the teaching/learning process. The Dean of LLT is part of the University’s leadership team, sitting on the Provost’s Council and a central figure in setting institutional direction and priorities, as well as the leader of Libraries and Learning Technologies.
The new Dean of Libraries and Learning Technologies will have an exciting opportunity to help shape this unprecedented, transformative period in AUC’s history. The ideal candidate for Dean of LLT will have degrees and accomplishments appropriate to a leader of an aspiring world-class university, including the MLS from an ALA-accredited institution, or an international equivalent, and a master’s-level subject matter degree; vision, imagination and energy; familiarity with the evolving fields of libraries and learning technologies and with the transformations that continue to be part of those fields.
AUC, founded in 1919, is one of the leading private liberal arts universities in the Middle East. The University’s 6,200 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled through six schools: Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, Global Affairs and Public Policy, Sciences and Engineering, Continuing Education, and the Graduate School of Education. Salary and benefits are competitive, based on qualifications and professional experience. For expatriates, the University provides housing, annual travel for home leave, and educational benefits for dependents at the University and, for up to two children, at select local private primary and secondary schools. This appointment will be made in winter 2010-11, and the position will begin in Summer 2011.
