The UBC Library is the second largest research library system in Canada and has more than 20 branches and divisions, including on- and off-campus locations, and the UBC Okanagan Library. Nearly 250 full-time equivalent employees – librarians, management and professional staff, and support staff and a temporary hourly staff complement of over 100 students - work in the UBC Library system. The 2016 operating budget is $40 million. The UBC Library participates in the broader research library community as a member of both the Canadian Association of Research Libraries and the Association of Research Libraries.

The University Librarian reports to the Provost and Vice-President Academic and provides leadership and direction to UBC Library as an active and integral partner with students, staff, faculty, Deans and the Executive. The UBC Library is a globally influential research library promoting knowledge creation, exploration and discovery. The successful candidate will play a key role in attaining UBC’s mission and goals as outlined in the University’s strategic plan, and in fulfilling UBC Library’s mission to advance research, learning and teaching excellence by connecting communities, within and beyond the University, to the world’s knowledge.

The successful candidate will have a graduate degree from an accredited school of library, archival and information science. They will have a vision of the research library in the 21^st century and a proven commitment to excellence, extensive senior administrative experience in a large academic research library, a demonstrated ability to develop external relations and fundraising partnerships, and will be collaborative and entrepreneurial. The University Librarian will possess authentic leadership skills and sensitivity to the challenges and opportunities present in building and retaining a transparent, collegial work environment; as such, this individual will be dedicated to cultivating an inclusive work environment and will recognize and eliminate barriers faced by under-represented groups and individuals. The successful candidate will promote and foster a supportive environment built on appreciation and they will encourage contributions from diverse groups and individuals and embrace their curiosity and creativity, ideas and innovation.

 

The anticipated start date for this position would be 1^st July, 2017.

Howard-Tilton Memorial Tulane University seeks a creative, experienced, and enthusiastic professional for the role of Coordinator for Scholarly Resources for the Humanities.  This position supports Tulane faculty and students in the physical science departments, primarily in the School of Science and Engineering.  Reporting to the Director of User Services and Library IT, s/he combines information literacy instruction, research consultations and outreach with collection development for assigned physical science subject areas. The Scholarly Engagement Librarian acts as the library liaison to assigned departments; meets with students, faculty, and researchers individually or in groups to provide timely, relevant services and sources of information; evaluates information needs; and plans, implements, and assesses initiatives that support the physical science faculty and students across campus.   S/he collaborates with counterparts in the humanities and social sciences to ensure a consistent approach to instruction, learning and research, and outreach.  S/he collaborates with the Coordinator for Scholarly Resources in Sciences and Engineering to provide and promote science related workshops in areas such as e-science/e-research and data management plans. The Scholarly Engagement Librarian and his/her colleagues use a team approach to fulfil the library's mission in an era of fast-evolving information needs.  

 

The most attractive candidates will have an ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent at the time of hire and experience working in an academic library.  Demonstrated engagement in information literacy instruction with a focus on student learning; knowledge of current trends and best practices in information literacy instruction and assessment; experience with library research tools relevant to the sciences; related reference and research consultation experience; understanding of collection development including financial responsibility in an academic library; and knowledge of the scholarly communications process (publishing, copyright, repositories) will also be essential.  Demonstrated enthusiasm for creative and engaging outreach; strong interpersonal, communications, and organizational skills; and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, technology professionals, and library colleagues are also necessary.  A degree or track record of scholarship in the physical sciences; at least one year of teaching using instructional design, lesson planning and assessment; and one year of collection development in an academic library would be desirable.

The university is located in beautiful uptown New Orleans, bordering Audubon Park and the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line (listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places).  The booming Freret Street corridor and many unique shops and restaurants are close by.
