[LIBJOBS] Position Announcement: Head of the Center for Faculty Initiatives and Engagement, Univ. of Kansas

The University of Kansas Libraries seeks a dynamic, innovative, and collaborative leader to join the Center for Faculty Initiatives and Engagement.  This individual will work with faculty, researchers, and students to integrate the Libraries into a variety of research and learning initiatives and will develop opportunities for librarians to actively support and partner in campus scholarship activities. 
 
OVERVIEW: The Head of the Center for Faculty Initiatives and Engagement is integral to the success of our vision for the Libraries to advance scholarship through proactive engagement in research and scholarly communication. The Center for Faculty Initiatives and Engagement will focus on supporting KU’s faculty and research community, including KU’s research centers, through collaboration and engagement in teaching and research support to drive discovery and innovation. This center (in close collaboration with other library units and personnel) will provide higher level coordination and resources to support specialized initiatives and cross-­­­­functional teams, and will work closely with the Libraries Office of Scholarly Communication and Copyright. This position reports to the Assistant Dean of the Research & Learning Division.

70% Professional Responsibilities

  • Provides direct oversight and administrative leadership for the activities of the Center for Faculty Initiatives and Engagement including evaluations and other personnel processes.  
  • Engages with faculty in all disciplines, campus research centers, and other appropriate University divisions to communicate, develop, and promote research and learning initiatives and integrate the Libraries expertise into faculty research and instructional support initiatives.
  • Develops and capitalizes on opportunities to leverage technology to advance scholarly inquiry.
  • Develops resources to equip researchers with knowledge of trends regarding the intersections of technology and scholarship.
  • Collaborates with Research & Learning leadership to ensure the distribution of work for division personnel is appropriate for the successful design, delivery, and support of programs.
  • Plans and directs activities in support of the Libraries’ strategic planning and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Develops assessments and metrics that measure the Center’s success, and provides data for planning Center and Division work to meet the goals of the Libraries’.  
  • Works positively and productively in a changing environment, providing a supportive work setting and a positive role model that demonstrates professionalism, a strong user orientation and a willingness to adapt to change.
  • Fosters a highly collegial, collaborative and open environment with the ability to develop and sustain collaborative relationships

Reflects this understanding in his or her work as a librarian at KU.
  • Actively participate in, and advocates for, the educational role of the Libraries through dynamic engagement in campus teaching and research, campus collaborations, or staff development and training.  Identifies and makes use of teaching opportunities in any circumstance, promotes the Libraries instructional resources and support, and obtains instructional expertise from colleagues as appropriate.
  • Actively participates in and contributes to strategic professional development and training for Division staff and other stakeholders.

20% Research

  • Contributes to the profession’s collective knowledge by engaging in scholarly research activities.  Research may include the publication of articles, books, book reviews, grant-supported inquiry or editorial work.

10% Service

  • Engages in service to the Libraries, the University and to professional organizations by participating in committee work, projects, and other contributory achievements.

 

*Required Qualifications

 

  1. ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent from a foreign institution.
  2. One year of full-time work experience providing research and/or instructional support in an academic library or in an academic department or program.
  3. One year of experience supervising full-time employees.
  4. Effective written communication skills as demonstrated by the candidate’s application materials, and other examples of written work and/or publications.

Preferred Qualifications

 

  1. Experience building and maintaining collaborations with researchers and/or faculty on educational programs or scholarship in a university setting, as demonstrated by application materials.
  2. Ability to work independently and as a team member in a dynamically changing team environment.
  3. Demonstrated creative thinking and problem solving abilities, and excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact and work collaboratively with a diverse population of students, staff, faculty, administrators, and other members of the community.
  4. Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and self-direction.
  5. Ability to use a variety of technological applications in research and classroom contexts.
  6. Knowledge of assessment software, trends, and techniques employed in libraries and in higher education.

The Pennsylvania State University Libraries invite applicants for the new position of Collection Services and Strategies Librarian. This position will have responsibility for leading Collections Services, creating and implementing strategies for collection building and management in the ever-evolving environment of scholarly communication. The person appointed to this 12 month tenure-track faculty position will report to the Associate Dean for Research, Collections and Scholarly Communications and will work closely with subject liaisons on all Penn State campuses (24), Acquisitions, Access Services and the Business office to manage the collections budget and build on collaborative relationships at the university as well as with regional and national partners.

The Collection Services and Strategies Librarian will have wide responsibility for helping to build the collections of the Penn State University Libraries. This position will work in a highly collaborative organization to create and implement innovative approaches to provide strategic and effective stewardship of collections in all formats, and provide guidance and oversight for the collections budget and the work of the subject specialists.

Responsibilities and Duties:
The Collection Services and Strategies Librarian will provide leadership and coordination for collections-related projects and initiatives and will develop a cutting edge program for building and stewarding collections. This includes periodic and on-going reviews of automated selection programs, making selection decisions for retention of materials, and developing rubrics for de-duplication of resources to create budget flexibility. Additionally, the selected candidate will assist in the management of the materials budget, manage endowments and special funds in collaboration with Acquisitions and the Business office, and conduct budget planning and allocation to develop and implement fund management practices. The Collections Librarian will also create and oversee new and continuing subject specialist training, and manage/coordinate subject liaison activities in relation to budget, allocations, reviews, and assessments. The successful individual will assist in the development of a data analytics program to inform collections strategy and institutionalize the application of data to allocations and collection decisions in collaboration with the Assessment Librarian. It is expected that this individual will be engaged with national and regional consortial partners to advance strategic collections activities, and provide effective and consistent communications with university constituencies regarding the library's strategies and programs for collection development and management.

Qualifications:
This position requires a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution (or equivalent); significant professional experience in an academic or research library; broad knowledge of library collection development issues, practices and current trends; demonstrated competency in analysis, budgeting and planning, assessment and evaluation of library collections; demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategy in developing or managing library content; demonstrated ability to work independently, and collaboratively, to plan, coordinate, and implement effective projects; strong commitment to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion; ability to meet the requirements of promotion and tenure; commitment to professional development and service; excellent organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills; and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Desired qualifications include the evidence of ability to develop strategy and lead change across an organization; knowledge and understanding of 21st century collections issues for research libraries, emerging practices, standards, and trends relating to collection development and management in an academic or research library environment; knowledge and understanding of Open Access and Scholarly Communication issues; and an understanding of statistical analysis and research design.

Compensation and Benefits: Rank and salary are dependent upon qualifications and experience.
