[LIBJOBS] Qatar - Doha - Cataloguing Librarian (Arabic)

The Qatar Foundation is establishing a state-of-the-art Central Library to serve the diverse information needs of the residents of the State of Qatar. The Central Library, to be located in Education City, will take a leadership role in meeting Qatar Foundation’s goals to become Qatar's premier information resource for the academic, research and public community. It will serve the general public of Qatar, universities, schools, research institutes and Education City partners. The Central Library will offer a suite of educational and research opportunities, services and programs supported by comprehensive collections of print and digital materials. The library building, designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, is scheduled for ground breaking in the first quarter of 2011 with an anticipated opening in the summer 2013.

 

The Central Library seeks dynamic, innovative, service-oriented and culturally sensitive applicants for the position of Cataloguing Librarian (Arabic).

POSITION SUMMARY:
The position works with the Head of Cataloguing Department to develop the long term strategic goals and objectives of the cataloguing team. Catalogues print and electronic resources in both English and Arabic. Creates and maintains authority records and edits and processes data files and MARC records from vendors and various bibliographic utilities. The position also assists with the ordering of Arabic language library materials.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform original and complex copy cataloguing of Arabic and English print and electronic resources to ensure accuracy of the database.
  • Ensure quality of bibliographic records through compliance with international and local standards such as MARC, AACR2r, LCSH, LCCS, OCLC, LC cataloguing practices, and other appropriate cataloguing and metadata standards.
  • Supervise and mentor the copy cataloging team.
  • Assist in the development of a Qatar wide initiative to establish an Arabic language cataloguing standard.
  • Assist with ordering Arabic language library materials and liaise with vendors.
  • Serve as a resource person to the Central Library and the Education City library community for Arabic cataloguing and acquisitions issues.

REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

·         Masters degree in Library or Information Science accredited by the American Library Association or foreign equivalent.

·         Minimum five years of experience in library technical services areas including cataloguing and acquisitions; preferably in an academic or research institution.

·         Knowledge of international cataloguing standards such as Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2R) and RDA, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), LCRIs, MARC 21.

·         Knowledge of digital library standards, technologies and techniques such as OAI/PMH and Z39.50.

·         Understanding of metadata standards such as Dublin Core, EAD, or METS.

·         Experience in print and electronic serials cataloguing using CONSER standards.

·         Fluency in oral and written Arabic is essential.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The position is responsible for the day to day management of digital resources through the use of an Electronic Management System (ERM).  Responsible for ensuring licensing and contractual requirements are met. Tracks licenses and arranges for renewals. Responsible for cataloguing and maintaining digital serials records. Responsible for appropriate display of resources in various library systems and websites.

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Evaluate and recommend on the planning and implementation of an electronic resource management (ERM) module to ensure user friendly access to electronic resources in a technology-intensive learning environment.

·         Implement and maintain the administrative interface for the knowledge databases, the A-Z list, and various electronic products per stakeholder consensus

·         Manage and monitor the electronic resource product life cycles through trial, evaluation, purchase and renewal to ensure compliance and functionality

·         Catalogue databases and individual journal titles using resource and MARC bibliographic records.
