The Arlington Department of Libraries is committed to providing innovative, high-quality services to its diverse community by offering access to information, promoting the joy of reading and creating welcoming spaces for learning and discourse. We are seeking a Librarian Supervisor to lead the Columbia Pike branch Library and welcome candidates with strong leadership experience and customer service ethic.
The ideal candidate will be a skilled strategic thinker and problem solver, able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, meet deadlines, understand and focus on system-wide and County priorities, work successfully within a team and communicate effectively face to face and in writing. Candidate must demonstrate knowledge of current trends in public libraries, be technologically savvy and forward-thinking, be a proven innovator who can manage change and have a strong background in internal workgroup dynamics and supervision.
Major duties of this position include:
Managing daily operations and customer service delivery;
Contributing to Department strategic planning and evaluation of policies, programs and procedures;
Creating and implementing programs and services that meet the current and anticipated needs of the community;
Developing and maintaining community contacts;
Overseeing the Branch collection and, in collaboration with the Library's Selection Specialist, making sure that the collection is current, relevant and reflects community needs;
Working with staff to merchandise materials regularly to highlight areas of the collection;
Supervising and evaluating assigned personnel and making hiring decisions that reflect the diversity of the Arlington community;
Managing resources effectively and efficiently;
Ensuring equitable staff participation in development and training opportunities;
Participating in a variety of teams/workgroups/committees that further the library mission.
The Librarian Supervisor operates with substantial independence and reports to the Branch Services Division Chief.
Selection Criteria:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Masters of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited college or university, plus three years of professional experience providing direct public service in a library which includes at least two years' experience managing a facility or leading a team.
SUBSTITUTION: A librarian's certificate issued by the Virginia State Board for the Certification of Librarians may substitute for the Master's Degree.
DESIRABLE: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
Supervising a diverse staff;
Working with staff and patrons to develop services and programs that meet the needs of the community;
Working in a diverse community;
Creating innovative programs, including technology, to reach out into the community; and/or
Redesigning of services and/or facilities.
Special Requirements:
Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Librarian's Certificate.

WORK HOURS: Scheduling is determined by the needs of the location and includes some evening and weekend work.
