The University Libraries at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) seek a dynamic, thoughtful, innovative, strategic, and team-oriented individual to serve as Manuscript Archivist. Known for its strong existing holdings in creative writing, women's history, music and dance, and physical education, the Library is looking to broaden its collecting in the areas of local history, civil rights, and the underrepresented communities of the region. The Manuscript Archivist will work collaboratively with teaching faculty and library colleagues to consider and evaluate new collecting areas and strengthen existing collections. In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to the department's efforts to promote the use of its collections in teaching and learning, exhibits, programming, and digital projects. Reporting to and closely working with the Head of the Special Collections and University Archives, the archivist will join a department of four librarians and eight paraprofessionals. It is a twelve-month tenure track faculty position. Demonstrated professional achievement, service, and scholarly activity are required for reappointment and tenure.
Key Responsibilities:
• Assists in the setting of the department's collection development priorities and pursues an active collecting program that supports existing and emerging areas of strength.
• Ensures the intellectual control and access of diverse collections through processing, the writing of finding aids, metadata creation, and the digitization of collections.
• Establishes processing plans, sets processing priorities, and manages work flow.
• Promotes the use of manuscript collections in teaching and research and actively participates in the department's program of class sessions and workshops.
• Participates in the department's reference services by responding to remote queries, scheduling faculty consultations, and taking weekly shifts in the reading room.
• Promotes the collections' profile and visibility at UNCG and the larger community through collecting, outreach efforts, and public programming.
• Assists in the selection and adoption of new technologies to encourage the use of primary sources by the UNCG community, educators, scholars, and the general public.
• Works closely with staff in Technical Services, Reference and Instructional Services, Electronic Resources and Information Technologies, Library Development, and the Digital Projects group on a range of ongoing projects and new initiatives.
• Assists in the pursuit of grants in the areas of access, preservation, and programming.
Required Qualifications:
• Master's degree in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
• Minimum of 3 years of archival experience with responsibilities in arranging and describing manuscript/archival collections, collections management, reference, and project management.
• Knowledge of current issues and trends in archival practices in the areas of descriptive standards, collection management, digitization projects, and preservation standards and practices.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to speak to a wide range of audiences, such as faculty, students, donors, development staff, alumni, and the general public.
• Strong organizational and project management skills and the ability to perform effectively in a collaborative environment.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with scholars and donors.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Second master's degree in humanities.
• Understands the theory and practice of collection development.
• Familiarity with digitization projects and related metadata schemes.
• Experience in grant writing and development.
• Supervisory experience of professional librarians.
