The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries (http://www.libraries.iub.edu) are among the leading academic research library systems in North America. The IUB Libraries provide strong collections, quality service and instructional programs, and leadership in the application of information technologies. The IU Libraries system consists of twenty libraries on the Bloomington campus, five libraries in Indianapolis, and a library at each of the other six campuses across the state. The collections support every academic discipline on campus and include more than 9.9 million books, journals, maps, films, and audio/visual materials in over more than 430 languages. Users can access more than 400 databases, 60,000 electronic journals, and 1.4 million electronic books, as well as locally developed digital content.
The IUB Libraries are active members of regional and national associations and consortia including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Digital Library Federation (DLF), and is a founding member of HathiTrust, a shared digital repository.
The Indiana University Libraries seek a knowledgeable, innovative, dynamic, and service oriented individual to serve as International Studies Librarian. Reporting to the Head of Area Studies, the International Studies Librarian will be responsible for collection development, reference and research consultations, and instruction for a diverse community of students and faculty engaged in interdisciplinary areas of research and teaching spanning a wide range of topics and themes related to international studies. The International Studies Librarian is responsible for two acquisitions funds: International Studies (which includes international documents, government documents, as well as the publications of non-governmental organizations), and the global studies fund (focusing on transnational resources).
Established in 2012, Indiana University’s School of Global and International Studies (SGIS) opened its new state-of-the-art building in 2015. The new building brings departments, area and language studies programs, and research centers related to area and international studies together and combines IU’s world-renowned area studies programs with newly established and developing programs in the areas of International and Global Studies. With responsibilities related to all international studies activities on the IU campus, the International Studies Librarian will serve as the primary liaison to the Department of International Studies and the Center for the Study of Global Change within SGIS.
The Area Studies Department of the Indiana University Bloomington Libraries includes six librarians and four support staff employees who are responsible for all aspects of collection development, management, reference, and outreach to students and faculty in African, Latin American, Spanish & Portuguese, Latino, Slavic and East European, East Asian, Middle Eastern, Islamic and Central Eurasian, South Asian, and Southeast Asian Studies. The department’s mission is to support and strengthen teaching, learning, and research by providing the collections, services, and environments that lead to intellectual discovery. RESPONSIBILITIES
· Develop and manage the library’s interdisciplinary collections in the areas of International and Global Studies. Responsibilities include managing two acquisitions funds to select materials in all formats, work with vendors, conduct ongoing collection assessment and analysis, select items for the Auxiliary Library Facility (ALF), as well as other collections-related activities.
· Serve as the liaison to the International Studies Department and the Center for the Study of Global Change
· Support research and scholarly communication in the above subject areas through outreach to faculty and students.
· Provide reference and instructional support related to International and Global Studies for students and faculty across the campus.
· Work with instructors and faculty in the School of Global and International Studies to develop active and collaborative approaches to teaching
· Actively collaborate with other library departments, such as Social Sciences, and Teaching & Learning, to teach and provide services.
· Serve as an active member of the Libraries’ Area Studies Department.
· Contribute to developments in the field of area studies librarianship through active professional engagement and research, presenting and publishing in appropriate venues.
· Develop regional, national, and international partnerships and collaborations
· Promote the Libraries' culture of diversity and inclusion, and support the values outlined in Indiana University Bloomington’s Campus Strategic Plan (https://provost.indiana.edu/strategic-plan/index.html) and the Libraries' Diversity Strategic Plan (forthcoming).
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
· ALA-accredited Master of Library Science (MLS). Candidates with advanced degree(s) in relevant subject areas and appropriate experience in an academic setting will also be considered
· A strong academic background in International Studies or a related subject, such as Political Science.
· Demonstrated understanding of major trends in research and scholarly publishing related to International Studies.
· Ability to deliver in-person and online reference services, which includes knowledge of reference tools and strategies used in academic libraries, the ability to synthesize and relay information, and the ability to instruct patrons on research techniques.
· Some teaching experience.
· Understanding of the complexities required to navigate interdisciplinary. collections, and of international and government documents.
· Excellent communication skills in English.
· Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well with diverse populations of faculty, students, and academic colleagues.
- Ability to develop partnerships and collaborate creatively and effectively with others, both across library departments and beyond the library.
· Ability to meet the requirements of a tenure-track librarian position.
· Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations and a commitment to incorporating the differences, complexities and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.
Preferred:
· An advanced degree in International Studies or other Social Sciences related discipline.
· Experience in collection development.
- Experience with active and collaborative approaches to teaching, both face-to-face and online.
· Experience in information literacy instruction.
