The University of Minnesota Libraries seeks a motivated, energetic, and collaborative professional to serve as Cartographic & Monographic Metadata Librarian. The ideal candidate provides intellectual access for cartographic resources and monographs held by the University of Minnesota Libraries, including the John R. Borchert Map Library, by performing original and complex copy cataloging in accordance with local and national descriptive and encoding standards, or obtaining suitable vendor-supplied catalog records.  The position will design, implement, and manage workflows for original and copy cataloging of cartographic resources. Metadata librarians work with the Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services in coordinating metadata projects, training and mentoring support staff within the unit, and writing documentation. The Cartographic & Monographic Metadata Librarian will also participate in Libraries-wide efforts, such as digital library metadata development.  The librarian will also contribute to the profession through research, publication, and professional engagement, as he or she works toward continuous appointment status. This position reports to the Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services in the Data Management & Access Department.


Required Qualifications include an American Library Association accredited Master’s degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent combination of advanced degree and relevant experience, and one to three years original cataloging experience, applying current standards and systems including AACR2, RDA, Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and OCLC Connexion and library management and discovery systems

This position provides leadership for all aspects of cataloging and metadata services, with an increasing emphasis on enhancing discovery of the University of Minnesota’s unique collections. The Head is responsible for the oversight and organization of seventeen cataloging staff, including the direct management of eight catalogers. The position will lead the development of policies, best practices, and standards to continuously improve workflows and outcomes. Required qualifications include an American Library Association accredited Master’s degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent combination of advanced degree and relevant experience; a minimum of five years professional cataloging/metadata experience in an academic library with demonstrated expertise and proven leadership in cataloging and metadata services, including experience with a national cooperative cataloging program such as PCC (NACO, BIBCO, CONSER or SACO); and, evidence of leadership skills and innovative management and results-oriented operations, including a minimum of three years supervisory experience, with a strong commitment to fostering growth and development in others.

Departmental Overview

The Library Department is responsible for the administration and operations of most of the libraries across the University of California, Berkeley campus. The Library department offers a host of services to students, faculty, staff, alumni and visitors, including hard copy and e-books for niche fields, and study space.

The Catalog & Metadata Services Department at The Library is responsible for cataloging and physical treatment of all new monographs and serials in all formats and languages (except Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) for the UC Berkeley Main and subject specialty libraries. The Catalog & Metadata Services Department is currently seeking a Metadata Creation Professional. The person in this role is responsible for maintaining the Library's catalog - OskiCat.

This is a full-time Career appointment.

Responsibilities

The Metadata Creation Professional will:

  • Create and upgrade metadata/catalog records for continuing resources in all formats (primarily print, digital, microform).
  • May provide metadata for foreign language materials as necessary.
  • Perform complex database maintenance by resolving conflicts, improving or correcting bibliographic items, holdings and/or authority records in the UCB online catalog, OskiCat.
  • Perform problem analysis for NRLF, subject specialty, and other library collections.
  • May contribute authority records to national cooperative cataloging program and/or may perform complex authority and headings work in local database.
  • Analyze, evaluate, interpret, revise or propose revisions to established guidelines; writes documentation and provide training pertaining to unit procedures and policies.
  • May serve as an expert liaison to other Library units.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in a related field and/or equivalent work experience or training.
  • One or more years of experience performing copy and original cataloging of continuing resources (preferably in an academic environment)
  • Demonstrated experience performing copy and original cataloging of electronic/digital resources
  • Knowledge of and proven ability to apply/use current cataloging standards, practices, and tools for original and complex copy cataloging, including but not limited to: RDA, AACR2, MARC21 formats, Program for Cooperative Cataloging CONSER standard record and PCC Policy Statements, Library of Congress Classification and Subject Analysis, Cataloger's Desktop, and RDA Toolkit
  • Experience recognizing and resolving catalog errors
  • Experience using OCLC and an integrated library system
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills together with attention to detail for complex, possibly repetitive, detail-oriented work
  • Ability to participate in multiple concurrent projects in a given timeframe, monitor project workflow, provide regular reports or updates as necessary, and meet project deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and able to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both independently and as a team member or leader
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

The Collections Division of the University of Tennessee Libraries invites applications for a technical services leadership position of a newly combined department that is responsible for the acquisition and management of library materials in all formats as well as interlibrary loan services.  The Acquisitions and Serials Department Head will lead the Libraries in developing and implementing sustainable acquisition strategies in an environment of evolving collection models.  This position requires a strong commitment to collaboration, customer service, and innovation. The Department Head directly supervises the Licensing Librarian, the Acquisitions Manager, and the Serials Manager.  The position leads a department of 18 FTE and reports to the Associate Dean for Collections.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·       Provides leadership for all aspects of acquiring and managing physical resources and e-content.

·       Ensures fiscal accountability for library materials acquisitions and expenditures.

·       Maintains close working relationships with the Collections department heads, subject librarians, the Libraries' Business Services Office, and the fiscal offices of the University.
