Publications Specialist

 

Computercraft seeks a highly skilled individual who will be responsible for liaising with journal publishers and the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The Journal Applications Specialist will be a member of the PMC Production Team at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). General duties will include overseeing new journal applications, managing the publisher agreement workflow, and submitting cataloging requests to the NLM.

 

The successful candidate will work onsite at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with experts from NIH's National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in the National Library of Medicine (NLM).

 

Required Qualifications and Experience

 

·         Bachelor’s degree

·         Two years of experience in publishing or a library

·         Creativity, flexibility, and a positive attitude

·          Ability to learn new software and work in PC/Mac/UNIX environments

·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·         Exceptional attention to detail

·         Ability to analyze and resolve complex problems

·         Superior organizational skills – ability to establish new processes and streamline current processes

·         Demonstrated ability to set priorities and work both individually and collaboratively

·         At least two items from the “Desired Qualifications and Experience” list

 

Desired Qualifications and Experience

·         Master’s Degree in Library Science, or Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program with knowledge of bibliographic standards and practice including LOC/MeSH subject headings and MARC/OCLC records

·         Experience working with legal documents and digital signatures

·         Database querying and reporting experience

·         Understanding of STM publishing models

·         Experience creating and maintaining documentation

 

Job Responsibilities

·         Process incoming journal applications and manage the workflow from receipt through to acceptance or rejection

·         Report on trends in STM publishing and applications to NLM and NCBI staff

·         Correspond with publishers and NLM staff about PMC requirements, journal applications, participation agreements, and cataloging questions

·         Update and maintain the integrity of the PMC publisher and agreements database

·         Create and improve existing documentation

·         Work with the NLM collection development, acquisitions and serials librarians to create effective cross-departmental workflows

·         Stay up-to-date on professional developments through participation in professional organizations, system meetings, workshops, and continuing education opportunities
