South Florida Librarian

The Steven & Dorothea Green Library at Florida International University seeks a knowledgeable, innovative, collaborative individual for the position of South Florida Librarian. This is a new position charged with building a South Florida collection with a scope that encompasses various formats such as, print and/or electronic, cartographic, and audio visual materials recognized for being unique, relevant to, and having historical value to South Florida.  The individual we seek for this position will lead efforts to enhance, make accessible, and preserve a focused collection of materials that will engage community users and address the academic needs of the University.

 

Reporting to the Head of the Government Documents Department, the South Florida Librarian will lead and manage the FIU Libraries Local Documents Collection, promoting awareness and use of this collection.  The person is charged with actively soliciting, selecting and retrieving materials to cultivate a concentrated collection which includes materials from governmental and community agencies in print and/or digital formats concerning distinct cultures and communities of South Florida.   They will be responsible for developing, maintaining and publicizing the existing print local documents collection through web-based subject guides and the Libraries' content management tool, which may include copy cataloging and call number placement.  This individual will collaborate with the Department Head of Special Collections and the Unit Head of the Digital Collections Center in the preservation of materials with unique and/or historical value.  The individual in this position will work closely with the library subject liaisons to promote the use of FIU's Local Documents Collection to ensure alignment with University curriculum standards.  The South Florida Librarian will also collaborate with various agencies in the surrounding community and the University community to promote the collection.

 

As a member of the Government Documents Department, the successful candidate will provide general reference and research assistance, including contributing to virtual reference services and participating in the libraries' information literacy and instruction program. Some evenings and weekends may be required. As a library faculty member, the South Florida Librarian is expected to participate in professional development, research, and service activities in order to meet the Libraries' and University's requirements for promotion.

 

Required Qualifications:        

-ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information science.

-Demonstrated ability to work effectively with broad populations including students, faculty, researchers, state and local government officials, and the general public.

-Demonstrated ability to excel both independently and as a team member in a collaborative working environment.

-Demonstrated ability to contribute to the profession through publication, professional association activities, or other contributions.

-Excellent entrepreneurial, time management, and problem-solving skills.

-Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

-Demonstrated goal setting & project management skills.

-Basic cataloging skills.

-Creative and enthusiastic with strong public relations skills.

 

Desired Qualifications:

-Two or more years as a librarian in an academic environment.

-Knowledge of digital production including digitization and preservation.

-Experience in grant proposal writing and implementation.

-Experience with community engagement and outreach.

 

Rank/Salary: Non-tenured faculty status; rank and salary are competitive based on qualifications and experience.
